Trailer, not a build but want to buy one.

I have borrowed a trailer from a pal of mine. A really nice thing, not cheap rubbish. It is only small, about four foot six wide by about six foot six long (quick guesstimate in the pouring rain).

So rather than keep on cadging one I fancy buying one of my own. The big question is, which ones are the good ones to look out for. I don't mind spending on one but I want to buy ONE, not a succession of sheds. I have absolutely no experience of them.

It will be used to carry sand, cement, timber, machinery and rubbish. Not motorbikes or jet ski's or indeed any type of vehicle. I am not sure that is relevant but again, no experience of trailers.

Ifor Williams P6E is 6x4 I think, you can pick them up for £500 upwards 750kg gross weight. Quite a few of them come with tops.

Even these are outside the spec for many waste disposal site but you can get permits to allow you to use them once a month depending on the area.

Ifors are good, as are Brian James trailers, you won’t go wrong with either of those. Avoid the ones with the poxy little small diameter, wide trailer tyres, they’re crap

Years ago we looked into a small livestock trailer for Mum and had a look at Ifor Williams etc. CLH were under 2/3rds of the price and a far better built trailer. It tows superbly behind the vehicles, people who've had both Ifor and CLH say the CLH tows much better on the road but the Ifor is a fraction better behind a quad in the fields.

They'll also customise any build to what you want, but bear in mind I think he's currently got a 2 month waiting list for some stuff. He does have some stock but it doesn't stick around for long.

They do very occasionally come up for sale but people who buy them tend to keep them and not sell them on. The one we have we've had for 15 years and it's not been particularly looked after but after a quick pressure was apart from a couple of small dents as good as new. No stupid plastic mud guards, fully galvanised steel strong enough to stand on.

Very useful people to know (they're only a few miles down the road from me). Particularly when he gets his Hi-Def CNC plasma in. I keep thinking I misheard him but he's looking at an 8x4m bed (metres not ft!).

I’ve got an Ifor Williams P6e which is now 22 years old and still like new. I do a couple of trips a year to the UK with it (1200 mile round trip) and it tows beautifully - even at 80mph on the autoroute there’s no wobble. Bought the mesh side kit for it 10 years ago, and got a tarpaulin maker to do me a cover for it to increase it’s versatility.

Mine was S/H and about £300. Have spent a little on it, replaced the floor with new buffalo board and new rear lights so probably owes me £400

Tows really well, little bouncy when empty but carries weight well

There have been occasions when 750kg gross is not enough, one day I might seriously look for an 8'x4' with more load capacity but at least with this one I can get into the local tip

As above mentioned, Ifor Williams, Indispension, Brenderup or Brian James are the 4 main names to look for. Personally i would buy a Iffor Williams as it holds its value the best (if you're thinking to sell at any time) however the other ones are cheaper to buy in the 1st place.

Buy on condition not year, its easy to spend £800+ on refurbing Ifor running gear,springs and brakes. Take a trolley jack,crawler board/laying down mat you when buying and check the lot.

Couldnt agree with this more. Ive a few trailers, two ifors,and a shiney new nugent stock trailer. When I bought the new one I thought the new ifor quality had been victim of accountants trying to increase margin.

Also ifor spares are dear, but the trailers do hold their value well. They are also often stolen.

We have a wee Brenderup trailer, one that I used to tow behind a Hyundai i30; we chose it because we used to store it inside the garage stood vertically on the rear door - a design feature. That became too much of a faff when the workshop became 'busier' (I filled it...) as everything had to be moved about to swiing it down and out the door.

They are also often stolen.

Yup, ever ours! Because of the foul weather we had over the weekend I didn't notice that someone had a go to nick it; my wife only noticed when she came back later one evening and noticed it was down. It stands against a wall covered in a tarpauliin and is hidden from view, has a wheel clamp fitted that they'd only noticed when they swung it down and tried wheeling it with the tarp still in.

Avoid the no name home built/ tarted up old trailers unless they are very cheap and you have time/ money to make your own improvements.

The like of Brian James/ Nugent/ Ifor are streets ahead in quality and will be plated (not guaranteed on a home built jobby).

Mate has a large Daxara trailer that I borrow sometimes when my little Erde or flatbed aren't suitable. The Daxara isn't as good a quality as a Brian James Ifor Williams but I'm surprised how tough it is. Over the years (at least 15) it's be thoroughly abused by everybody and even had a fire inside from somebody tipping hot BBQ ash onto other rubbish yet it's still in basically GWO.

When you get it. Use all of your half tins of paint ( we all have them) and paint it with whatever colours you can. Make it stand out. Thieves don't like to stand out.

There were Several ex Environment agency Ifors up for auction last year, no more than 5 years old but wrecked

We used rent graving to a welsh sheep farmer who brought sheep across into Herefordshire, he had a lot of sheep around because he could pay well as he was getting hill farm subsidy payments.

I probably put 10-20K miles on stock boxes in a year, once they got to the point they needed bearings and brakes he just chopped them in for a new one. He got a good return and offset the costs against a new one. It also meant the only time he didn't have a trailer to use was the 10mins where they switched them over at the dealers.

another good make is Graham Edwards.

Anything that uses Al-ko/Knott/Bradley parts - axles, brakes, inertia hitches etc - makes replacement straightforward - I got a 1996 Ifor last year and spent £200 on brake parts, and it works as good as new. Even if it looks rough!

I'd go the next one up than a p6e tbh if you are carrying building materials
It's the same size but braked so will carry a tonne bag

I'd say a gd64 takes a lot of beating for multi-purpose use and alot of vehicles can tow it without a trailer license still
