easy gears in teeside. they recondition your box but none of them are cheap as its very time consuming your better off getting one from a car breakers with lowish milage and they guarantee them then get someone to fit it for you . I got one for my combo van and it was 200 quid . then got someone to fit it . another500 including a new clutch plate

My Daughter in Law runs a Countryman Cooper S, their mechanic is a friend, told them to sell before the clutch goes due to cost of replacement - changed days from doing Mk 2 Escorts outside in the driveway!

and we used to grumble about taking a camshaft out of an overhead cam ford engine or changing the starter motor

I’m going to change the oil tomorrow as a desperate attempt to avoid taking the box out. Anyone tried this stuff?

I was being facetious, BMW and Audi love to make things as complicated as possible.
The old MK2 clios were much the same, having to drop the subframe to get the box out. I saw someone once so desperate to not drop the subframe that they devised a way of moving the box out, super glued the friction plate to the pressure plate and slipped it in through the gap in the hope that the first use would break the superglue. Pretty sure it end up getting scrapped.
Though the DMF change on an X5 is the easiest gearbox removal I've ever done.

see what comes out when you drain the oil, may well have a magnetic drain plug, fill it with magic thick oil or whatever and drive it until it breaks or sell it, I don't think the slick 50 would help with a whine, sawdust may help but best do it now before they ban it, someone will buy it, the year / value of the car makes a difference, if a BMW mini wants to die let it, I worked on BMW's for 40 years but did very little work on mini's, no one was ever happy, my mechanics hated working on them, I hated having a ramp tied up for a week to do a job and customers thought I was ripping them off, best avoided, you have to drop the subframe to replace roll bar bushes or wishbone bushes, bolted from the top and no access...……………..

A friend's daughter bought a Mini One, I went with her to look at it and it was a nice little car.
A few months afterwards she lost all drive. Apparently it's a known fault where the diff gear is bonded to the shaft but the bonding fails allowing it to just spin on the shaft.

The V10 M5 paddle shift gearbox / dual clutch is a real easy job, one of the few you could make a decent profit out of, most general garages would not even quote for it, two hours to fit a clutch …. from memory

Modern stuff? The gearbox in that mini was a peugot/citroen thing (MA if i recall) so it's a 20 year old design if not more.
Have rebuilt loads - they were fitted to Rover 200s and 25s once apon a time - and yes the crown wheel used to come away from the diff then too. Usual failure point was the input buaring - £15 part. Not a difficult box to rebuild, if a bit strange with gears running on a splined shaft - no needle rollers. I know of one plucky Scotsman who hung one on a 1400 k series turbo, 400 bhp, in mini....
