Video Editing Software

Can you point me in the direction of some simple free software that’s easy to use

I’ve been playing with 4K on my canon and have captured some good video of an industrial process ive been looking at recently.

Now it will be good if I can stitch it all together to make a short film

Bear in mind I’m a dumb ass with computers so it has to be idiot proof

I’ve splashed out on one of these

And learnt how to use Ai servo tracking on the camera when in video mode. I’m quite happy with my first few goes. Now to turn it into a film. For me that’s the hard bit

I just use windows movie maker, nothing fancy but is easy to use.

The free version of https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ which as far as I can see gives 90% of the full package. The only bit I found difficult was grabbing single frames, it can be done with a bit of effort but not as easy as in the full version. You do need a powerful PC or laptop with good graphics performance, my work laptop is not up to it and it will not install so I run it on a 2015 MacBook Pro.

Parm ...you will need a very good graphics card with plenty of ram, and a fast CPU to edit 4K ...I bought my latest PC just for 4K editing ..it was secondhand but the guy paid nearly £3K new for it ...the graphics card alone was £800.00 !!!

I've always used Premiere but it's only available (legally ) as a monthly paid package........

He could have halved the price building it himself.

A GTX 1050 should do for 4k editing. 150 or so notes
1080 would be even better. 2080 isn't gonna set you back more than 500 and that's an improvement on the 1080 again


Do want to build an i9 rig this year. Scary expensive for the current gen though.

This is going to be interesting then as I just have a “normal” pc and laptop. Both are quite new and work but I’ve never used them for video editing.

Think I’ll stick with a windows offering first and see how I get on. It’s an interface I’m familiar with and doesn’t require downloading new software.

I have used openshot video editor it's free but I have not used it with 4k, but it might work

And in at number 4 ... DaVinci Resolve as I said above, it will do 4K on an i5 MBP the renders do take a while though.
Down load it, if your specs are too low the installer will not run so no loss.

It's a somewhat steep learning curve but there are loads of intros and guides on youtube

My experience of Wondershare software in the past is that it was riddled with spyware. Antivirus software had a fit during installation.
