mini mill

I have a myford super 7 lathe and i am looking at a mini mill but as i cant afford much i want a mill the can either be attached to the myford or stands underneath it so i can use the cross slide on the lathe in stead of buying a compound table as i want to save money

the jobs i will be doing on it are 4mm end mill cuts down to 4mm in brass and the same in mild steel could you help advice me or post links to something

How about getting a milling attachment for such small work. I have this small slide which as you can see is just cobbled-up on my lathe for this one job in mild steel (making a flycutter for my mill as I have modified the mill spindle but got no collets yet). Something like this would be able to easily handle the work you describe.

There are milling attachments for most lathes. Here's one that came with my Atlas/Craftsman:

That was a first test. I have since made a collet chuck, that really helped as a regular chuck will not run the bit true.

Just used it last weekend to make a carriage stop:

The adpators work well for light milling. The area is usually small; on mine I can move the work over a 3x5" area.

that was my origianal idea but the bearing are all out by about a thou speaking to my dad though and he said he will hopefully realign them and i hope from what im selling in the future i will by a mill

Any advice for realigning bearings

Matt what do you mean by using the lathe cross-slide instead of buying a compound? Milling machines usually come with a x-y table anyway. Another difficulty is that most milling machines only have a couple of inches of quill travel, so if you have a mill hanging over the lathe it'll have to be dismountable or it will get in the way of the lathe toolpost.

Aah - with you now. THe mill will most likely get in the way of the lathe operation. There are some mills with heads that are height adjustable - I guess you'd need one of those.

Yes indeed, many round-post mills have a head that will swivel.

Should work. The bearing alignment should not be an issue with milling.

Any idea of how to adjust them on super 7 great lathe other than that bearing as my dad hasnt had a chance to align them if its not to complex i may give a go my self

As the Super & was basically a clone of the Atlas lathes in the US,the head looks similar to an earlier version of mine(I assume it has babbit bearings, not a Timken.)

Usually there are shims between the upper and lowe half of the bearing caps. You should be able to remove one shim at a time, reassemble and measure play.

If the chuck moves up and down it is not aligment but adjustment, the front bearing is a taper bronze bearing, and the rear is 2 angular contact ball bearings, bearing adjustment is shown on page 25 for the manual, found a copy of the manual here http://www.metalwebnews.com/manuals/myford-super7lathe.pdf
Be carefull to if you set to bearings to tight you could damage the front bearing.
