Anyone who actually buys one of these deserves everything they get. Not that I am advocating injury, just that people expect something manufactured to such a price to actually perform like a quality item.

How much does it cost to manufacture such a mask, and how much profit is actually being made on the higher priced stuff that we normally assume is far better quality?
Some things from China seem to be impossibly cheap, even with the peasant level wages they pay over there.
I bought an eBay pipe bender last year, cost about £80 from China. Someone sent me a link to the actual manufacturers web site, where I could have bought the same product for a fiver, if I’d ordered 100 units together.

Thing is that units made by ESAB and other top names are probably made in China anyway, and possibly in the same factories.

Optrel are made in Switzerland or at least the ADF is, not sure about the shell.

I’d love to see a test but I wouldn’t be surprised if the UV protection is comparable to high end masks. A bit like sunglasses, the £5 specials on eBay actually work fairly well.
I’ve no doubt more money buys you build quality, clarity etc but for safety I doubt there is much difference.
If they are polycarbonate then no worries...

China has very low property prices. Very low taxes. Low wages. Cheap electricity.
Having said that when it comes to mass production with automated machinery their prices are not that much better these days.
I priced up getting some plastic pallet crates made. In the UK in bulk they are about £100 each. I had a similar price from China - IF I was prepared to purchase the injection moulds - at about £800,000!!!
I have said it for a long time but when you look at high end welders etc we really are paying through the nose. Ok I know the manufacturers have to spend on R+D etc etc but even so.

They might offer almost or even the same level of protection of good brand ones but I wouldn't gamble my vision on that assumption. Good brands at least have the assurance of a good QC and testing even if made in China.

I once bought a electric radiator fan when I lived in the Philippines, cost me the equivalent of £10. A year later I ordered some bits from Summitracing in the USA, one bit was an electric radiator fan, which cost me the equivalent of £60.
It arrived, in a box proclaiming “Proudly made in the USA”.....
The fan was the EXACT same unit as the local bought one, even down to the little gold “Made in Taiwan” stickers on it.

I got £15.00 today for my 4 year old (£19.99 ebay special) Auto darkening mask.
It was bought within 20 minutes of me posting the advert.
They guy came over, saw it, tried it with my Mig welder, paid the £15.00 and went; all done and dusted in less than 5 minutes.
