Someone gave me a Dyson, as they didn't like it.
I think it must just be massive coincidence, but it turned on fine for about 20 mins, and then started making burning smells and wrattling noises.
So I opened it up and the motor enclosure was full of what initially looked like mouse muck, but, on closer inspection, was hard carbon lumps from a disintegrated brush. Which accounts for the wrattling also.
And the burning smell? Windings insulation all burnt - but I figure this may have happened over a lot of time.

I'm not going to shell out £60 for a new motor. For that money, it's landfill. A set of brushes (a tenner or so) maybe. But I'm thinking its beyond that, right?
If it was low voltage id hold some wires on the commutator and see if there was any life, but on mains I'm not as keen.
Motor is all pressed together. There's no getting into it beyond what I've done.
