CSCS Card

Would anyone be able to tell me how one can acquire a CSCS Card as a welder with no Welding based NVQ qualifications?

I cant see any way to do this on their site. I'm not after the Labourers card, but the skilled worker.

My HNC/HND entitles me to the academic route card, but still wont qualify me as a welder on sites

I thought the CSCS cards were about safety not qualifications, I don't have any electrical qualifications just 30 years of experience but got a technicians CSCS card.

I have and that was useless, just told me about using my HND for academic route, nothing to do with getting the skilled worker card

I did that course a couple of years ago and recently renewed my CSCS but it achieved nothing, doesn’t even get printed on card, it can be looked up online by employers that have the CSCS access but otherwise it had no effect on the card! It is possible I completed the application wrong but my college also had the same result.


The only ‘win’ I had was recently completing the CCNSG meant I didn’t have to sit the CSCS test again, although the only hardship there is actually attending as the test is so easy it prohibits, literally no-one, from obtaining a card.

had to get one when doing work on a cooncil site did the exam where people do there theory driving test ,took about 20 mins got issued with a card ,
A year or so later i had to renew it to a 5 year card cost 35 £ iirc
had to send all my city and guilds as proof
not a bad thing tho , it weeds out the chancers

I had one because the council wanted it. it ran out so I never bothered replacing it as no longer do there work then the councill told the builder they should all be cib checked he said well go get someone else to do your work as most had some convictions one sort of another mainly fighting I chirped up I haven't any and I been checked cos I work in schools all that means is you haven't been caught

The whole thing is a nightmare. Good that it weeds out chancers, but it is very much aimed at making money for the scheme administrators.

For example - CSCS have removed 'site welder' as a recognised category. Great decision.

I organised a NVQ in steel erection for him which provided the minimum qualification needed to get a blue skilled worker card and was the closest relevent category. With the full knowledge of the assessor I did his 'course work' and submission sat at my desk inside two hours. The assessor came out and verified he actually existed then low and behold he got an NVQ and therefore his CSCS card.

I can point you in the direction of the assessor we used if you want. Strange how CSCS won't accept a number of BS9606 'codings' as proof of competence.

Cscs is the biggest con in construction , real qualifications mean nothing, if you don't have an nvq they don't think you are qualified. Experience means nothing, and all they care about is their fees.

As far as weeding out cowboys. .. well ask yourself if you would buy a house from a big house builder? It's only bigger firms that want cscs, and quality is generally crap at best. As far as I can see all it does is allow them to pass of any due diligence to someone else ... ie cscs.

Completely agree, card and test shows nothing. Now I'm moving into site and project management a lot start by listing SMSTS and a gold card, both CITB and just a way of making money
