Honing / Glaze breaking

I have never done this before, but as I am now re-ringing a V6 engine, I have bought the Machine Mart Glaze breaker together with some fine stones. The ones fitted are medium. Nothing tells me when or if to use the fine stones. Any tips for a newbie to this please?

If it's just a deglaze then the fine stones should suffice. I'd use the medium if there was a noticeable wear ridge that needed removing, then finish with fine.

Don't forget to fit ridge dodger rings if re-ringing an old bore with any lip.

Flex-hone if you can find one the correct size at a good price is ideal for stuff like that.

Be careful how you use the hone, i beileve its really easy to wind up with a barrel shaped bore, wider in the centre than at either end.

Yes, just keep it moving full stroke until you get the cross hatch marks on the cylinder walls.

Or just use a Delapena that keeps it stones parallel

All done now thanks. I was highly unimpressed with the device. I went to change the stones for fine grade and carefully selected a good fitting screwdriver. Despite this, I managed to wipe out the head cross which then required removing with Mole grips. The additional stones were supplied with another set of screws, so it would appear that they know that the screws were made of cheese.

red diesel is what i use, handy and dead cheap (read free, i acquired it for services rendered...)

About 350 rpm with a steady up and down. With a cheepo hone that doesn’t keep the stones parallel beware of going down past their pivot points - can get a bit disastrous.
When you are done clean up by scrubbing the bores with hot soapy water to remove all traces of honing slurry. When you think that the bore is clean take a bit of white rag, put a bit of clean lube on it and wipe round the bore. Any trace of grey / black on the rag and it’s not clean!!

Blimey everyone is making it sound like you need to be in there for half an hour. You could measure the time you need to be going up and down in seconds, you are not going to suddenly make one part of the bore wider in a few seconds if you keep a steady movement.

Yep, dad used one like that years ago to refurb an engine, I think it was an Astra, W reg

Second lifing an engine So we have an oversized worn/honed bore with pistons that are now too small , new rings on old pistons that will be sloppy in the lands and have a big gap. If a bore mic was dropped in the hole first I reckon the hone would stay in the draw .
