New to me 3 ton old car Jack

how to move this so it sits right and not kill me when under car

I went for this as been looking for a couple of years but this when put on facebook was old and the metal looked twice the size metal and big bolts than the paper thin ones these days

I have an old Bradbury Jackette in the shed looks a lot like that one. It's a big old beast but is only rated at 1.5 tons. It has a handy quick lift for starting a job then the hydraulics take over.

so say its a clark i was told a 3 ton theres remains of a silver sticker that would very vaugely seam to say thats true

its only for lifting cars 4 an all in the family the bigest is max weight is a cmax about 1 ton 1.2 if i add my mates car aprox poss less i only wanted the bigger wide base as my 1 ton one is small years old leaks when a cars on it and goes down(very slow) and the bigger ones you can put a pad on it for lifting on the jacking point rather than putting on the chassie and some times getting in the way

and as im doing a few car bits at the moment i thought a bit of a small spend to get me what i wanted but did not realy want a refurb at the moment to much going on


ok if im going to have to take it apart (more ideas on this before im having to do this would be great for a quicker fix would be better) any thing i need to look out for ? apart from taking a finger off ?

what i cant understand is its bent on one side but streight on the other how can that be i would assume both to be bent then i could understand it

oh i like this idea seeing as its a welding foum pitty i cant weld (ok this could be a bit over the top about my welding perhaps no) but weld somthing that going to be underneath seams a bit far for me

I'd ignore it if the jack still works but if I desperately wanted to get it out I'd take out the cross brace and the front wheels and axle then get someone to lift it into the vice while I wind it shut to use it as a press.

It may have been run over or hit by a fork lift etc., they can lead a hard life. As for the make, a fair bit of badge engineering goes on with tools so it may be a generic jack with the suppliers colours and stickers. Mine has a Jack Sealey label.

Before you straighten it, lubricate all the pivots and check the oil level. Grease on the castors and wheels makes a big difference to moving them around.

If you take it apart and put the sides on a flat surface it will be pretty clear where the issue is. You should be able to get it better with a big hammer if it's bent.

Even if it was a brand new top of the line jack you should be under there without a secondary support so if the jack works then it'll probably be fine.

I suspect it's been dropped and landed on one corner.

Ditto, brilliant bit of kit, had it for over 25 years but one day it stopped lifting. Took it to bits & somehow the bore of the cylinder had been scored. Think it might hone out but up to press using a Clarke 2 tonne replacement which despite being less than 5 years old doesn't now lift to full height. The clarke also has a higher end profile which makes getter under lower cars difficult. Still hoping to sort the Bradbury out when I get the time.

Definitely not a Bradbury with the release /lowering mechanism that that one has and also the Bradbury doesn’t have a right angled top to the main chassis IIRC.?
Brought my Bradbury new in 1976 ,despite being in daily use for many years it’s still going strong, don’t think I’ve ever had to top it up?

Never rely on just a jack to support a vehicle when you're working on it, even if you're just sitting with your legs under it - always have stands or blocks as the main supports.

Apologies if Granny is teaching the sucking of eggs......

I would have thought if you use it on level ground and jack the biggest of your cars that that weight would probably level it. Worth a try. A little height at a time.

Try jacking the car up on it. Does it get any more out of shape? Does it look precarious? Shake the car, is it unstable? If not then because it's old school and being made of sterner stuff, then just use it. It's not like you're going to be under it without the car being on stands are you? ... Are you?

I’ve had the one with a handle from new probably mid 90’s. The other was for sale locally and I couldn’t resist at £10. It’s a bit of a mess as it was living outside before coming my way and I have been dousing it with Plus Gas to free the pivots so it can be stripped. I like the big pad and swap them about the three jacks depending on the job.

Edit: I just realised they are both Yankee jacks and the older one is made in Japan.

Yes dont just use the Jack and did the other day show youngest daughter how to jack a car up remove wheel nuts (notice how I put wheel in there)and put wheel under the car

As its not sitting right and have a few niggles that I dont like as I'm the one going to be using it it's going to have refurbish just a small one sorry to say not like some of the good jobs on here

Hi, Ahh, Is it twisted as well as the side rail being bent? If so then I didn't realise because it's not obvious from the pics and agree with your proposed course of action.
