Saw this today in a posh furniture shop, its made out of rough sawn junk grade soft wood, basically pallet wood, and the top isn't even planed level , thin steel box section legs, its not a solid top
like it looks , its 20 mm thick with a coaming round the edge.

£600 !!!!!

What would you expect for 600 quid? You are pretty much getting what you pay for there.

£600 is a bit steep I'd say as it's no doubt made in a factory but things are only worth what people are willing to pay and I'm as tight as they come.

I'd probably reasonably comfortably (read: pressured by the wife) give £300 for it, which is no doubt how much it will cost in the end of season sale.

The beauty of selling art is that you can simply put your prices up. Selling art is literally the polar opposite of selling a price sensitive commodity.

Its the retailer that will be raking in the money. They wont have paid more then 200quid for that. I don't know about you but I’d want more than that it build and supply.

Example; A local company makes the bulk of Otterman beds in the UK country, they get 65quid for a double bed base. They sell it on to be covered in cloth. Retailer buys and sticks mattress on top suddenly becomes £900+

That's why they are all going bust, making too much money.
Try the Landlords & local authorities (for starters, plenty more skimming some off).

Its not a terrible price. There's more work in it than you'd think.

Sure you can make a set like that yourself for less... but it'll take a decent amount of labour, and a couple hundred worth of materials.

I'd pay that have you seen the prices in the likes of Dobies???! Mental!

I wouldn't charge any less for making that i don't think. And by the time you take into account the cost of having a retail premises, staff wages and other associated costs I don't think it's too unreasonable. I've worked in furniture retail before and some of the prices are downright ridiculous but in this case I think it's not bad.

Edit to add: I'd refuse to make the top like that though. If i was doing it I would be making a solid top. Out of nicer wood.

It obviously has been made by someone who knows how, although the top surface is "badgers bottom," on purpose, there is not a hint of a gap between all those blocks, and although you can't make the welds out, the one plugging the end of the tube on the table top is invisible. Craftsman made I reckon. Can't see anything like £200 for materials though Munkul, timber offcuts and one or two lengths of box section £50 max.

A guy in the next unit to me used to make turned kitchen containers in a range of sizes and a choice of English hardwoods, sold them through Heals, Conran and a London branch of John Lewis'. In each case they set the price, he maintained he got half of that (I wasn't so sure) but he had to cover all incidental costs, transport and returns, no matter what the customer did to them.

Specific accompanying instructions stated not to put containers in a dishwasher, inevitably some did - and back they came to him for a free replacement.
Regularly shopping at the likes of Heals and Conran's suggest to me a customer might have benefited from an decent education but common sense doesn't seem to be a part of it.

He knocked it on the head eventually, simply couldn't make enough money out of it.
