Try installing Ccleaner or/and Advanced system care. Its amazing how much dross builds up on a system ( often by other programs you are unaware you’ve installed). Both are easy to use & free, you’ll be amazed t the speed increase.

I guess if I was absolutely certain that there was no way it could be accessed via the Internet, or by any other systems that are on the Internet, then that may make me sleep a little easier.

Yes it doesn't fill you with confidence when you see that the NHS is running XP almost exclusively.

well I have sort of got it installed. Its still as slow as it was before though....my other major problem is I hhave a DVR Guardian 2.0 thats never been used.....I thought there were 32 bit drivers for that in windows 7 but still could not find them..I know the forums are saying 64 bit does not exist.

Strange thing is even XP drivers are not listed on Swanns site. In fact the DVR4-750 which is on my box and the module its self does not exist on their site. I have the PDF which says drivers are installed with the software but I just dont have the disc....

So after all that it seems like I wasted my time and I will have to ask my lad to order an IP camera via amazon prime and home it comes tomorrow.

SOOooo . my next question is a sensibly priced camera (s) although 2 would be better to cover side and front of house...there is no point in having them if I cant make out details to give to police BUT I just dont have the cash just now to go stupid like I would do normally...

cheers mate. I have tried that one before on a 32 bit windows it did not work though

I am at the stage where is going to be a couple of IP cameras of amazon for speed if I can find my way through the plethora of advertising that all say they are the best cameras...lol

Linux isn't a bad option these.days but requires a little effort to get things working

Its not a lot of effort though? For Mint, I have 64bit and 32bit boot usb sticks and once loaded you might need a couple of extra drivers and job done.

Not the os. The software you want to run.
Eg drivers for cameras or emulation to use Windows drivers.

Maybe in England but not in Wales, my desktop team are busy rolling out Win10, no XP anywhere just Win 7 and 8.1, currently at 60% Win10

A fresh install of xp will speed things up a lot, make sure you back up your drivers before you start to make things easier. You will need the Windows key (often on a sticker under the laptop), I've also got saved copies of service packs 1/2/3. Beware you need to activate Windows after an install, I think the official activation website is now dead but there are options (fixes?). Suggest you search before wiping your current system.

And once you've done a fresh install and got all the software you require installed clone the drive and keep it safe.
Next fresh install entails saving data to a backup drive and copying the cloned drive
I try to do a fresh install at least once a year.

Yeah thats the theory but its still running like a dog on a fresh install......so given my time issues i had knocked any hope of getting this 10 year old DVR with less support than Boris working a a PC slower than a commodore 64 running hover bover...lol

To be honest it was more stubbornness on my part and i really need to research the best way of installing 2 IP cameras with the option of adding another 1 or 2 at a later stage. I actually have a real DVR but again that was never installed and it has analogue static cameras.

My requirements outweigh my initial budget sadly but i eventually need 3 or 4 moveable IP cameras that record to the network on a server or pc (wether that requires a DVR i cant make out yet.)

I have several analogue cameras but all static and probably not worth messing with.

So more research needed. Good news for my grandson is he now has a PC to watch his DVD's on...lol

Well my storage looks to have halved...when the guy dropped the drives of we tested them on Icy box. Both out of a NAS with a Raid array but strangely only one worked. As they are 4 terrabytes i paid 35 quid and he left both......but as i say as one with not initialise i cant see me getting the one working. So cheap storage becomes less storage but less money. Lol

The three I've just inserted are around 2010.
They have spent 6 odd years on antistatic bags though.
Will be grabbing some new drives in the near future though.

These were rescued from my old gaming rig before I packed my life into a van and headed back to the mainland.
Ol probably look for 3 big drives and a ssd for the os.
Run the other 3 in raid.

Nas drive is on the cards too.

I have a few that go back to 1993ish! We got the upgrade to a second drive to increase capacity to a whacking 500MB! That machine will still run windows 3.1

yeah I just need to see if I can fix the I/O error that its giving me. Cant find munch hard drive diagnostic software around to be honest. lol
