preferance (electrical)

anyone got a preferance between MK or Crabtree or BETTER.....nothing fancy just white plastic....
have a whole house to rewire...not been so happy with MK a few times....switched sockets where the switches jamed either open or shut (no heavy loads, just left for a long time)....

The BG stuff from screwfix seems ok, I think @brightspark uses it.
MK isn't like it used to be, another company trading off it's name again...

Schneider is decent, just had an extension built using all their stuff, I may be biased because I get a staff discount...

mk STUFF IS STILL MADE IN ESSEX WELL SOME OF IT MY MATE WORKS THERE ORDERING THE BITS IN TO MAKE THE SWITCHES/SOCKETS, BUT EVEN HE SAID IT IS cheaply made now.

I did the kitchen about 10 years ago all in MK never had any issues, I do notice the cheap stuff is often more difficult to get the cables in so I avoid it

I fitted a new MK bathroom pull switch. It is hard to pull and noisy, it nearly wakes the street in the middle of the night!!

I also like the connections in the MK, and I like the way they are moulded on the top edge

I did the whole house with screwfix specials about 15 years ago, very short of cash at the time and I had a lot to buy. I've had a couple of sockets and switches fail on me, usually in really awkward places, the one behind the dishwasher springs to mind. I quite like the look of Crabtree and my dad didn't buy anything else so fitted the recent extension with Crabtree and anything that fails uses the same.

I exclusively use MK, but I'm no electrician, they might not be like they used to be, nothing is, but they are far better than the cheaper stuff.

That being said I've never had an MK product I thought could have been better.

The plain white MK stuff looks a whole lot better than the square edge stuff from others that looks like it's from the 70s

bg are good ive just fit one today. screwfix can supply them cheaper then the electrical wholesalers

mk sockets are pants . generaly all the cables come in to the box in the middle knockouts top and bottom and all 3 conections on the sockets are in the middle and not spread out making it messy and hard to get the socket to go back even if I got them given I woluldnt use them . My house was originally built using Crabtree in 1973 however the quality has dropped over the years so now they are all being replaced with MK when replacements or upgrades required.

I will admit that if you have 3 x 2.5 T&E in the back of an MK double socket on a 25mm backbox and the cables are coming in the middle then it's a little cramped but with some careful tetrising it's workable. The biggest issue is usually because the spark has left zero slack in the cable...all those inches add up eh?

I've done my current house and last house entirely in MK, spot on with no issues.

I'm sure those polar sockets are great but they look cack.

All the metal clad in my workshop are MK, they just look so much nicer and are better finished than the ones I took out.

The good thing about MK it's probably the most commonly stocked so it's easy to replacements that are the same.
