Aldi digital calipers

Paid 40 quid second hand from someone on here last year.

I’ve used mitutoyo manual verniers for years while my dad has gone through god knows how many digital ones from £15-50.

Could of bought a pair of coolant proof Mitutoyos the amount he has spent.

My eyes are not as good at picking out the lines anymore so I need to invest in a set.

Yeah i am the same with micrometers, i would invest in a few digital micrometers, but they are expensive too.

They turn on if i tough them, the measurements are weird sometimes it measures a iter at 116mm them again at 120mm I think they are going back. The lidl ones are the nuts compared to these

Don’t buy mitutoyo digitals from eBay. Used, new, anything just don’t do it because there are probably more fakes than genuines on there.

I have found that they work ok, and not too bad for accuracy, but do not like being left in garages/sheds etc, where they are not impervious to damp atmosphere, I have found that a couple of months in an airing cupboards brings them back to life (sometimes) I have just rediscovered one i left in the cupboard under the towels.Result. new battery and working again!!

Just get Mituotoyos. Don’t muck around with anything else. They are the world leader in digital metrology.

I’d get the coolant proof ones, only because they’re even better made than the standard ones.

I'm gonna be the oddball here, and speak up for the Workzone calipers.

They're a reasonable quality electric ruler, and cheap enough to not worry about them being dropped, stepped on, or lost under a pile of "work in progress". Aldi seem to have these for sale on a regular basis now, and my local stores end up selling them at clearance prices (I bought them for as little as €5 a set).

All of these cheap calipers use capacitive sensors. If you keep them dry and clean they are capable of perfectly acceptable accuracy and repeatability for almost anything calipers should be used for, imho. Battery life is a problem with some of the cheaper ones (inc. Workzone) because the on/off button only turns off the LCD display so the power saving when switched off is all in your head.

If you're a pro user, or a serious tool head, then yep Mitutoyo is the way to go, but for those of us who regard all of this as a hobby, the cheap calipers are infinitely better than no calipers, just as good as the best manual calipers, and much easier to read for those of us with less than perfect eyesight.

I do have one set of "Sunday best" calipers in my tool box - they are from the Maplin (RIP) Precision Gold range from back when Maplin used to sell half-decent stuff rather than disposable consumer tat. They're no more accurate or repeatable than the Workzone, but they have a much nicer feel, and they actually turn off so the battery life is pretty good.

As an aside, has anyone here linked their cheapie calipers to an Arduino or RPi to make a DRO?

Don’t buy them unless you need them to be coolant proof.
Yes they are better quality because they are built to keep coolant out but if your just wanting a quality hard wearing set with spot on accuracy and repeatability then the original digitals are perfect

they will be for use on the lathe so coolant and oil prof would be bennificial

If you plan on covering them in coolant then yes the extra £40 is a worthwhile spend. I’ve just got the standard ones. Mine are old as they were made here not Japan.

Have to agree buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I like to keep cheapies in the truck and in with the spannering shop. Nothing wrong with the cheap ones but I have found the battery or caliper failure rate quite high. God was still a boy the last time I changed a battery in my Mitutoyo but seem to be swapping them in the cheap sets all the time. Perhaps the battery running costs of the cheap calipers make them more expensive over time than a Mitutoyo
