Drill bits with square taper shank

Hi , I was sorting through a box of old drill bits, I was given and found these two. I have never seen drills with this type of shank before. I presume they are fairly old, going by the way ,the 7/16th one is marked. Does any one have any info on these?

I have some with a morse taper sleeve that fits on to the taper

I've always known these to fit into a brace? Or the even older type breast drill... thing.... could be wrong though?

I know I've had a few from carboots, with a longer pararallel shank, cut the square bit off and use in standard chuck.

Not the brace labeled B in that pic, it's got a three jaw chuck. The first one is what you need.

Used with a kind of clamp on overarm widget called a stoop to give the screw thread in the hexagonal bit on the back of the brace something to push against, providing a self feeding action.

There were fancy ones that took Morse Taper drills too.

Not that bad to use as long as the drills are sharp.

Pretty sure Dad's still got at least a couple of them in a box somewhere. I've used them a few times for awkward jobs where power tools were not practical/sensible.

There's different sizes of square taper that more or less correspond to Morse Taper sizes.

I have just got a raft of these drills in unused condition (nice big sizes as well), I am guessing they where used on a Capstan lathe of some description.

Some of them are marked FB Tools Sheffield (Firth Brown) do you have a MT that these fit ??


The drills are too good to waste, that’s for sure and if you have a spare Morse Taper to fit them I am all ears

Got one in the garage somewhere, mine takes morse taper bits though.

The square taper ones were used on a hand cranked Ratchet pillar drill or similar.

I restored one a few years ago ( Negatives are in 35mm format)

Similar to a old style "Bit and Brace" carpenters tool.


The only other one similar was on a old Fred D TV programme. HE was complaining the bit was sharpened wrong.

that size taper looks 2 big to fit in to a standard joiners brace

No it goes into a Ratchet pillar drill.

The original Bit and brace did not have a chuck, but a square hole.

Used these style drills quite a few years back when I had to bore a load of holes through 5mm stainless on a gunwale. They fitted in a thing kind of like a G Clamp and it had a ratchet and handle just above the socket that the drill fitted into. You clamped the bit you were drilling then used the ratchet to turn the drill and tightened the clamp every few ratchets and it was surprising how well they worked, still knackering when not used to it
