New diesel jaguar

The big news is I have just sold my old jag...

Well ok, perhaps it isn't big news... But..

I am wondering whether to go diesel again.

Looking at the 3.0d again from jag - just a newer version , but really not sure about diesel anymore - yes cheaper to run (circ 11p pm rather than ~14p pm) but not knowing what is in the pipeline re. the government and hatred of diesel - would it have any resale value in 5-8 years time?


The thing is jaguar have dropped all the large petrol engines and now only offer diesel above ~2 litres or so.

Anyone else undecided like this/me?

If you don't need to drive into a big city that may end up with restrictions then I don't see the issue. In 5-8 years time then that vehicles likely value will be to someone who needs a replacement engine for Disco 4. The 2.7TDV6 Jag was a common source for replacement D3 engines.

are you sure they've dropped the big petrol engines?

I'm sure they still build the supercharged V8? (so they probably build the non super one too?)

Looking at the xf, they dropped the largest engine 3.0 supercharged a year or so ago in the uk

you're right... I'm pretty shocked... just checked the jaguar website "build your own car" bit and it looks like they only do the V8 in the f type now

Dropped the V8 - that is sad news! I had an XFR supercharged for a while - awseome! To live with every day though the diesel sport twin turbo was a better bet.

The whole diesel fiasco is just that! They have done tests now on the Euro VI engines and found they produced far less NOX than first thought and will be allowed in any city that doesn't ban cars altogether! Having to use AdBlue is a bit of a pain but 10L lasts me 9,000 miles.

I am sticking with diesels - don't get me wrong I prefer petrol engines but they don't like me. My current Insignia does 36mpg and I drive like a man possessed! The petrol 2L was 22mpg with the same driving style. The XFR V8 returned 18mpg and the diesel sport 30.

Read up on client earth. For once it's not the politicians. Client Earth are a bunch of eco mentalist lawyers who keep taking the government to court.
I once emailed them asking why they didn't care that their actions were causing CO2 emissions to rise. No reply of course. Doesn't fit their agenda.

I would seriously test dive some hybrids, I had a GS450h , and would have no concerns over buying a Hybrid. and I normally buy big V8's

I have tried some, mainly BMW, but I would guess this would be my last big posh powerful car (retirement is fast approaching) but following on from this once I and hybrids have matured I will be going that way

have you looked at electric? I've only experienced a tesla but it was shockingly good

jag/bmw/audi all do electric too

electric so naff all per mile on fuel... but they need practically zero servicing too, mostly just tyres at normal intervals.

I'd go electric but they're all more than I was to spend

It isn't just about running costs. I priced up a Tesla v a Jag. £2000 v £800 a month. That buys you a huge amount of fuel.

It also depends on where you drive, electric is comming, but cant see it towing or journeys over about 100 miles.

JLR dropped the 3.0SI6 from the disco there is a replacement on the way but don't know when guess its same situation for the Jag cars. They offer a 4pot 2litre which has comparable PS but not as much torque not sure I want such highly strung 4pots in such a big cars. The sdv6 3.0l in the current disco has just come top in the new Air index test by autocar beating a Renault Clio !

I went for a petrol for my new car (BMW 520i) and after having diesels for more than 10 years I was astounded how quiet and refined a petrol engine was.

It’s a 2l engine with 2 turbochargers, I have to say I was a bit wary that it would be peaky compared to a torquey diesel but it’s not at all. 43 mpg from a big saloon, considering I don’t usually hang about, is not too shabby either.

Electric is OK but unless you get a Tesla which has a range of 300 miles, most of them are quite limited, my mate bought an Ampera it only had a range of 40 miles, then it was run by the range exstender engine which sounded like a tractor.

2L petrol giving you 43mpg? Why do I only get 22mpg when I drive such cars? That is a on a run at 56mph! Or is it a hybrid?

No, that’s average mpg as per the on board computer, and borne out by our mileage figures (it’s a company car so everything gets recorded).

It’s a mix of short local journeys and the odd long trip thrown in (a few trips to Worthing, and a couple to Aberdeen), its up to 11000 miles now so it’s pretty consistent. My previous car was a 1.5 diesel qashqai that wouldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding if in the wrong gear and that only averaged at around 50mpg so I’m super impressed with this.

Well that is truly incredible. My brother's audi A5 2L petrol gets 26mpg driven gently by him.
When I had a petrol Insignia I was getting 22mpg and the Vauxhall Mocca my mate had for a week returned 9mpg when I drove it! 1.6 petrol turbo auto. Horrid car.
