PLEASE don't do that, flashing headlights cause danger to other road users and is not permitted by the Highway Code apart from saying "I am here".

So if the Home Office said they were not going to prosecute speeding motorists do you think there would be no more drivers breaking the speed limit?
When you saw those three cars were you driving or observing the autobahn from a fixed point? Did you have a picture of car speeds over the full length of the autobahn?
the problem isn't people speeding.... the problem is terrible drivers... if everyone was half decent they wouldn't need to bother catching speeders because you'd only speed when it's safe
they should make everyone resit their test every 10 years... if you fail the test you should have your license revoked till you pass... with a month between tests
(maybe the first one is 4 or 5 years after you pass, before it changes to every 10 years)

I think one of the points against excessive speed is that although YOU may be an expert and experienced driver at those speeds, people around you are just not expecting a vehicle to be doing 40MPH faster than the limit and may pull out or lane change 'safely' as far as they know, only to have the YOUR expertly handled speeding vehicle trying to mate with theirs.
It’s shocking you can do a test at 17 and not have any kind of retraining until your 70s (even then isn’t it self assesment).
The standard driving test should be similar to the advanced driving test then retested every 5-10 years like you say and some kind of staggered test like motorbikes.
It’s not just speeding; manoeuvring, parking (both where and ability to), spacial awareness, hazard perception, lane dicipline, signalling, drink and drug driving, it’s terible by so many people and don’t even get me started on phones.
I totally agree. some of the most dangerous drivers I have ever seen have also been the slowest. If a kid ran into the road their reactions are so terrible they wouldn't stand a chance.

Watch Russian dashcam footage on YouTube as well. The road rules and speed limits are there for very good reason, you drive on the road you should abide by the rules. The sheep mentality that everyone else is doing it then I will as well is no excuse.

We have accept that the roads are there for everyone to use. Just because Mrs Bloggs isn't an expert driver doesn't mean she should be denied access to the roads. If you want thrills go on a track day.
They're unbelievable - nobody seems to have awareness of what's going on around them.
Of course I don't. But having driven long distances there you get a feel for the traffic speeds. I find Spanish motorways have the highest speeds - probably because there is so little traffic - oh and motorways in remote parts of Scotland!
Motorways are far safer than any other type of road despite high speeds.
Bad driving is what kills - it would be much better if the Police resumed motorway patrols rather than relying on cameras but of course they don't make money that way!
They scare the life out of me. Most accidents seem to be caused by drunks. Even after a big accident the lorries just keep on driving. Then the 2nd biggest factor seems to be unroadworthy vehicles followed by appalling roads. But vodka is by far the biggest factor not speed!

I've been doing that for decades, as it's appreciated by truck drivers to know when they are clear to pull in. I'm not going to stop doing it because somebody tries to lecture me about it.

My example of a victimless crime was on an empty motorway ie nobody else, wide awake, not drunk etc. who is effected by the fact you are over the legal speed?
The only fair effective speed control are the averaging speed cameras, you have no option but to put cruise control on and relax.

What consequences?
The trucker that's just overtaken me is looking in his mirrors trying to judge when he's clear of my car / van / whatever. I aid him by giving him a flash, he pulls in and the truck that's behind him can carry on with his journey too. Everybody's happy. I don't go around flashing at just everybody, you know. In those particular circumstances it's actually an aid to road safety. 90% of the time the overtaking trucker will double-blip his tail-lights in acknowledgement.

Somebody else sees the flash and thinks that it is an invitation to pull out or in?
The truck takes your word that it is clear to pull in and then clips something?
A driver in front sees the flash and thinks that an emergency vehicle is coming through and so swerves left?
A driver sees the flash, thinks it is a speed camera and so brakes hard?
Lots of potential scenarios that I see regularly whilst on the bike and it puts my life in danger at the very least, like those who stop on a main road and flash a waiting vehicle to come out of a minor road.
I know that you are a lovely guy and you are being friendly, helpful and courteous, but I do believe that flashing headlights should be made illegal on the public highway.

Where that could fall down is if a car driver thinks the lorry is too close and flashes his headlights to warn the lorry driver he's there. The car driver might think it's better to use headlights because the truck driver won't hear the horn.
Those of us that do (or have done) a lot of driving know how lorry drivers use their headlight flasher, but if push comes to shove the car driver would be in the right if the lorry pulled over too early.
