Post Knocker Rope

I've bought a Parmiter Contractor post knocker for the tractor. The weight is about 180KG and it needs a new rope, I can buy the correct rope for about £35 plus VAT and postage but the skin flint in me wants to source the right kind of rope at a cheaper price.
I know I need 3.4m of 20mm 3 strand rope but I'm unsure of what material is required ie. Synthetic Hemp, Nylon etc.

Get the proper rope. We messed about with steel wire and blue nylon rope all sorts. Either snapped or snagged.

It’s yacht rope, you get it at a chandlery. Might not be any cheaper

Have you tried running the post banger with your tractor? I bought a Parmiter a few years back at an auction. I had new seals put in the ram and replaced the hose. My International 258 (Industrial 584) wouldn't even run it and I ended up selling it. The contractor version has a heavier weight too

Not yet, my John Deere should run it as it's a 75HP tractor and the hydraulics are good, it will pick up a ton on the front loader.
I will test it before investing in a new rope though, good shout.

I can get synthetic hemp at £2 a metre which has a breaking strain of 3.5t so £8 vs nearly £50, it's a big difference and I don't want to fork out for the expensive stuff if I'm just buying the same rope but bagged up and labelled as Post Knocker rope!

It's a 1977 vintage 2130 with a power loader, mechanically it's sound but the cab is shot. Most of the time it has a back actor hanging off the back.

Just been out and tested it, it's a bit slow picking the weight up, about 4 seconds to full extension (on tickover) but there is a lot of rust on the guides so hopefully with plenty of grease and use it will speed up.
The weight free falls when the lever is dropped so that's the important bit!

The way I look at it if a rope snaps then all that will happen is the weight fall in exactly the same way it does in normal operation. Even when using these thing with a brand new correct rope you should never ever be in any position where that weight can hit any part of your body. I've seen people with theirs hands on top of the posts and stuff like that, you'll never use that hand again if something happens.

It's very unlikely I would say that Parmiter had some special rope made for the job.

Is it the SG2 or OPU can? I know of spares for both, as I’ve been looking myself for our 2140.

They’re very steady at picking anything up on tickover. 1500rpm speeds things up a little

Ours lifts a ton on the front loader, but you know about it, 4WD if you do mind, as the rear end goes a little light

At that age I should say it will be the square cab possibly secura

Parmiter, we used to do a fair bit of subby work for them years ago. Are they still around?

Is it that Dynema rope stuff, flexible and stupidly strong stuff...

I think parmiter went quite a few years ago and after doing further research yes they did as shelbourn reynolds hold parts stock

I don't know about post knocking ropes but bitter experience with cranes makes me shy away from cheap ropes, the old adage of buy twice rings true. Try asking Briden ropes if they have a recommendation, they are in my opinion about the best you can get.

@steviec_lj I believe we are both right the opu is the same as the secura I drove a 2650 for a lot of years from new and put 8500 hours on it before I moved to pastures new we allso had a1640 both 4 wd then the 1640 went in px for a 3600 JD Renault cross than was a dead loss

I have the rope you need sitting in the workshop. 3.4m of the stuff that is advertised for parmiter post knockers. I bought it for the one I made but it wasnt long enough.
