caused considerable mirth with the rest of the crew because in their league, nobody tells the ballast off least of all a raggy arsed amateur!
Teams all changing they have new owners and so they are bringing a new crew in ...friends with Phil and Tom.

No, doubt that Chitty has anything to do with 2CV racing. He's been crew chief for a number of LeMans class cars, but now runs his own Caseliner business, obviously using his contacts in the racing world.

The 'official' position was that the F1 engine used the same 5-valve technology as the FZRs of the period. In reality the engines were all 4-valve heads. Apparently an excellent engine, let down by gearbox and ancillaries that had way too much flex.

I seem to remember an article about a v8 version which was in effect 2 fzr 1000 engines back to back, the slant of the blocks making the “V”. But that might have been completely different from the official Yamaha engines

I can't actually remember which engine it was that was under discussion, as it was in the mid 90s I think it was probably when they were supplying V10 engines to Tyrrell. 2 FZR 1000 engines in a V would only make a 2 litre V8 (unless it was seriously overbored).

Yes, that’s what I’m not sure of - I’m sure I’ve seen a home brewed lash up V8 with a pair of fzr engines as I mentioned above (I’m fairly certain it was in a bike magazine and was fitted in a quad?), but I also can’t remember whether the official engines were also based around the fzr setup (eg the 5 valve head) or not.

The publicity bumf for the FZR bike engines made the connection between the two, but the F1 engines definitely ran 4 valves per cylinder. The 5-valve heads were for road bikes only. It's telling that modern Yamaha superbikes (R1, R6) all use 4-valve motors and have done for best part of 20 years.

The OX series seem to apply to F1 and power boat engines, I can only assume the internals are used in different castings because they look nothing like each other . They are very small units, the ones on the other page have 5.5" diameter clutches for reference.

I don’t know that any Yamaha 600s ever ran the 5 valve head (I had one and that was a 4 valve back in the mid 90’s when the 1000 was a 5 valve design), and the R1 changed back to 4 valve mid 2000s. My guess would be that any advantages they had when they first designed them back in the mid 80’s had been overtaken by other developments since then. (Modern materials, better design etc etc).

As far as I remember it was only ever the 1000cc motors that ran 5-valve heads. I gues that finding space in the combustion chamber with the smaller engines was more difficult (and costly). As you say daleyb, the 5 valve engine got overtaken by advances elsewhere.

The 0W01 750 also had a 5 valve head iirc but was out of my price range (by a factor of several times

Yes, forgot about that one - Yamaha's answer to the RC30. I bet prices for them are in the stratosphere now, as they were a rare beast even back in the day.

Yeah - I think the 0W was my absolute favourite “exotic” bike of that era, and there were stacks to choose from around that time - RC30, GSXR-RR, ZXR -RR, 851.

I used to work in a place servicing small engines, including boat engines. The boss had a project in the corner which was a wrecked honda 4 cylinder boat engine, according to him it was virtually identical to a honda car engine. His plan was to fit a honda vtec it its place giving him a 170+bhp outboard!
