Drill chuck repacing help needed

I have a Meddings pedestal drill in need of a new chuck its a Jacob no,34. 1-13mm I have the old one off how does one work out the size of the bit that the chuck attaches to there,s J2 j3 and morses been reading but it baffles me I am not up on these things, help.....

do you have a picture of the drill press end?

in general, Morse chucks are male,(socket in drill press) Jacobs taper (jt) chucks are female.(socket in chuck as yours appears to be)

just because it's a Jacobs make, doesn't mean it will have a JT fitting though.

having said that ...

my meddings pacera mb2 has a jt2 chuck fitting. (but was available with Morse taper as an option )



my old (unknown) drill press had a 13mm Jacobs chuck, but it screwed into a 5/8" imperial thread. I still have the chuck, as it was the correct thread for the DeWalt PowerShop radial arm saw. (opposite end to the saw blade), hence the reason I remember the size!

cheers bigegg some one off flea bay I was trying to buy a chuck off siad it was a J6 but after further reading on this site has led me to give Meddings a ring I am wiating for them to get back to me hopefully in the morning. Whilst the chucks off I am replacing the motor and giving is a bit off a clean anyhow, it been a good drill but has always had a couple of niggles like the motor always seamed a bit under powered and the motor adjustments are a bit weak when adjusting the belt.

Have you had a really good look at the chuck, I think most of mine have JT3 or whatever stamped on them.

If you supply you serial number they will come back with model, parts still available and build date.
Few weeks ago acquired a Meddings Drilltru Mk2 that was built circa August 1974 for my father.
I suspect you may find it is a B16 taper ...

Cheers graffian been over it with a fine toothed comb no stamp on apart from the Jacobs name No 34 and the size 0-1/2 and 1-13mm .

Milkybars I rang Meddings yesterday but unfortunatly the person I needed to speak with was unavalibe they said they would get back to me unfortunatly I was out all day away from the phone so fingers crossed for tomorrow. The one I have is the Dril Tru I asume mark 3 going by the number on the side pic attached.

Looking online B16 sounds like it could be the one. check the dimensions.

I have not been been the shop today and Meddings have not got back to me although was out of signal quite a bit so will ring again on Monday.
I do now have a bit of a dilemma, fathers been out and about a picked up this little beastie, its a Elliott Progress 3A. floorstanding I dont know much about Elliotts yet I will need to do a bit of looking around to see if its any better than the Meddins or not, it looks a real robust bit of kit I did notice and like the look of the power feed and wind up table on the Elliott my meddings does not have the wind up table and with the vice on it can get a bit heavy if no focused on the lift. It was a bit late when it came in so will have a good look over it in the morning.

RichardM I will trebble check tomorrow by going over it with some WD40 and wet and dry youve got me thinking ive missed something . I will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

Seadog Ive just spent 20 mins on google there is not much info on the Elliotts when one considers how much info is on the net when searching Meddings
Any idea what the parts situation is like on the Elliotts, Never had a need for meddings parts but the are still in business, I see there is a manual on flea bay on the Elliot 3A do you think its worth getting or not

Did not realise till a few months ago JT stands for Jacobs Taper.

I do associate the Jacobs name with drill chucks.

I tend to buy a new taper with the a new chuck.

I just buy 13mm or 16mm chucks on a JT3 taper.

As all my three tools have a JT3 taper - then I can move chucks about and not worry how the JT taper adapter fits the chuck.

premmington Ha ha ha i feel like ive just landed on another planet I am now totally lost as I dont understand what youve just said. Sorry my chuck has 1 hole and my drill has 1 pointy bit I gather the taper so I cannot change the drill Taper so I can only buy one size chuck with only one size hole to fit my drill . its the figuring out the number of the taper on the chuck thats foxed me to date..

The Elliott rights and all spares were bought by Gate Machinery - http://www.gatemachinery.com/about-us
but they don't manufacture spares for the machines. That's a good reason to go for Meddings, of course.

Hi we day eh still great to be stuck in the workshop when it chucks it down like today. Right well after a few hours cleaning the Elliott is staying what a a beast of a machine wins hands down against the Dril Tru, my father said the meddings were made for the masses and the likes of the Elliott were made to work the sturdyness and the overall general construction is far better the only thing that could possible ever need changing is the bearing and belts I do need to get one front pulley belt as there should be two there, shear luxury winding the table up and down, then when opening up the top where the belts are its a bit like opening a ford bonnet and a range rover bonnet hope you get the picture I love it. Its fitted with a very nice quick chuck made in the GDR is that East Germany?? It also has the biggest machine vice I have ever seen its a bit to big for me so will probably be moving it on with the medding. Oh i found out why the meddings felt under powered the plug was only using 2 of the phases and a neutral loads of power now.

Woops I forgot to ask there are these things on the moving parts photo attached are they grease points or oil points as yet no manual also is there any special oil for oiling these drill or is it whats to hand

The Progress is a professional machine and, unless it's been badly abused, will see you out. I've had my 2G since 1982, a 1950s machine at a guess, but still going strong. That looks like like a very nice milling vice, are you sure it's too big for you?

Thanks Seadog love the whistle I have done a bit of research and it turns out to be a Hurco milling machine vice by all accounts worth a tidy bit, I dont think i would ever use it as not got a milling machine.

I must be a bit slow or something as dont understand what Farside said and who's Gack
