It’s got four wires as per the pic, how do I wire this up to make it work from a 12 v power supply?

Probably ground (black?) then slow, fast and park on the other 3, looking at the wire size I would think Purple and White are the 2 speed feeds?.

Generic Internet info says Chasis is ground, then other wires are positive, speeds and self park

Bang your negative to ground on the metal somewhere and just positive on any of them see what happens.

Self park would normally be a live whenever the inigition is turned on.

So, nothing should happen if you power it up unless it's not in park position then it should move for a bit then stop.

The other 2 should make it move at 2 speeds until power is removed.

If you just want a short cycle then put power into the park wire and a momentary switch on one of the other wires. Press the switch briefly and it will make 1 rotation.

Test between the black wire and the case work with a meter first to check that it is the ground wire!

Right, got it working, case and black wire are negative, purple is high speed, white is low speed.

But in the process I’ve just killed a 12v 50amp power supply that I’d made from a computer PSU.

All I’ve got now is an old laptop supply rated at 65 watts which the internet tells me it’s around 5.4 amps.

Will this be enough to drive the motor.

If this all works I have the startings of next years BBQ project to be built over the winter

Use a car battery charger.

I have a spare one here.

Unless the magic smoke has come out you might find the psu will reset itself after a bit?

Most wiper fuses are 15a or so. You might want to up the supply a bit unless you are going to gear down the output. Spits generally only want to go about 2rpm.

The charger may reset. but a common part to buy is a diode in the rectifier. Or some do have a in line fuse.
I had one with a "Thermal fuse" hiding on the loom.

Don't get led down the road of assuming that it puts out 12ish volts of load. Measure the O/P current.

Take the black park unit off you will have 2 wires going in to the motor
It will run ether way depending on how you connect them

Wipers normally run a 30 amp fuse

It’s a brush motor the inrush current will kill a computer psu

It’s the 100 ish amps they try to pull for a tiny fraction of a second fuses don’t notice it but electronics do.

You can use a high current low resistance shunt to reduce the effect or as in a car the long wire.

The fets designed for auto applications rain sensing wires ect are very very tough semiconductors with quite tame continuous ratings. Ones I’ve been using on a project are rated for 25 A continuous ( if you can keep them cool ). But they can withstand 125 A.
