ratchet strap problem

Hi, i want to use a ratchet strap to tie down my oil tank and have fitted m12 eye bolts to the plinth.Problem is the hooks are too big to go through them so i need something to intermediate them.I thought of d shackles but the cheap ones look weak and strong ones seem very expensive, any ideas.

I've put D shackles thought a lot over the years and have never had one break so would say go with them.

EDIT: the 6mm ones might not have enough room for the ratchet strap hook either

you could always chop the hooks off the end of the ratchet straps and put the shackles straight on the end... but it's probably not worth the bother

I thought about cutting the hooks off but the short piece is triple layered and wouldnt go through the eye.

This question is not easy to get a proper answer to without knowing what the tank is on and how big it is.

Ie if it's 3000 ltrs on the bottom of a fighter jet, the M12 are not going to keep it in place.

If it's a 1500ltr tank on a concrete slab then it's not going anywhere anyway!

Must be close to fitting. Could you forge the two bent ends into a more rounded shape. Cold of course with a big enough hammer and cheap enough anvil!

I've never seen one tied down. I mean people might, but I've not seen it.

Even when they're 'empty' they still have a fair bit inside them, as the take off is never at the base of (modern) tanks so as not to suck sediment. It's always about an inch up, and an inch of kerosene over the area is a fair bit of weight.

Drive about and look at what other people do, and see if you can spot any others that are strapped down...

im a delivery driver and there are lots of tanks strapped down here, id say about 10% of tanks.Top of scotland so the weather is a factor and also it is an upright tank rather than a horizontal but lots of people here even strap down horizontal tanks.

Alternatively, if you’re stuck with the straps in the original post, cut 1 leg off on the hook, and put a blob of weld to hold the remaining stub to the remaining leg. I wouldn’t worry about bending the hook.

Na not even close, thought the eyes would be bigger and the eyes smaller but they are miles off.

Cutting one of the legs off is probably a good idea but iv ordered shackles now so ill just use them, thanks anyway.

What I mean is -

If you want to strap them down, all well and good, but you probably don't need some real thick linkage between your strap and the M12.

I just looked up M10 as it was easy.
