Heavy weight workshop/dust coat review/recommendation

I've got a medium weight workshop coat that I've started wearing again recently and fancied getting a heavy cotton one. I like the Arkwright brown ones but thought it would get in a mess with oil.

Found this company, ordered this one at 14:30 and it was on my doorstep 09:00 following day

I got the navy blue and it is a nice quality coat, ideal for times where I can't be bothered to put overalls on. It's also industrial wash so it can go on a hot wash

They can also embroider logos and text.

They also do lots of other workwear including heat/flame proof

Have to admit i prefer to wear t shirt and work trousers to overalls so this kind of thing will be perfect for me when i have to do the nastier jobs.

When I bought my milling machine it was from an old chap who must have been in his late 80’s. Both times I visited he was wearing a coat like that, pencil and small metal ruler in the chest pocket. He spent his time doing nut & bolt Velocette rebuilds and was impressive at it from what I could see. He looked like something out of the British Pathe videos. I thought I must get one of those coats as overalls are a pain. Cheers for reminding me !

I have a proper brown Arkwright style one, because it was £6 on eBay. It's great at fending off swarf and grease and so far has cleaned up almost like new in the washing machine.

For the workshop one on and one in the wash. For winter gardening and outdoor jobs a bib and brace , less faff than a boiler suit but still keeps my back warm.

WP, wear are you getting decent bib and braces from?
I hate wearing overalls, I’ve been wearing b&bs for a few years but there the nasty multi coloured things.

If you want the best ones out there go on a holiday to the USA and get some Carhartt, if you buy them from a workwear store in the States they are work wear prices but if you buy them here they are fashion money.

If you get the duck twill ones they are invinceable and if you watch any american outdoor/building type program it will be the default choice. If you go in the winter up North then they will have flannel lined and even quilt lined in stock.

I have some flannel lined duck twill trousers which are dungaree fit and they are amazing, I wear them for best but I've had them 10 years. I bought mine in Anchorage in the winter and they cost about $40. The guy in the shop told me about a customer who had come in the week before to buy some trousers and he was wearing a Carharrt jacket that he had been wearing for work for 25 years and was still wearing it!!!

The prices there aren't too bad and I wuld happily pay £ for $.

These are the ones I have, mine are all faded but they are the most comfortable trousers I've ever owned especially driving. The dungaree cut means the crotch are is not flat cut like a pair of jeans, it has curve/space. In the USA they stock in between sizes too, mine are a 33 waist.

I can digit out of my eBay history but it was made by Harpoon. Normally they are much more expensive.

I have no idea how 'gms' translates into material thickness, the one I got is pretty thin and was described simply as 'polyester/cotton'.

I still use my (originally white) lab coats I had from work.

but since I used to make ink, and I'm not the most careful of people, there's very little of the original white left.

unfortunately, my overalls from the same era seem to have shrunk and the press-studs have weakened, as they now won't fasten over my belly.

I one I bought is 315gsm so is thicker/heavier than a 245gsm. 315 was the heaviest i could find at sensible money, I think i did find a heavier one but they were £50

Agreed, Alsico are very good. I use one of their cotton heat and flame resistant jackets for welding

Really stupid prices though when you count the import duties and shipping from America. Couldnt find a UK shop for the quilted ones. Non-quilted were about 80 odd quid available in UK. Seen them on you tube while watching Andrew Camarata videos.

Really stupid prices though when you count the import duties and shipping from America. Couldnt find a UK shop for the quilted ones. Non-quilted were about 80 odd quid available in UK. The quilted stuff does still cost a bit out there and you would need to go somewhere at the right time for them to have stock. Probably unlikely that you'd get quilted on a Florida holiday. The duck twill quilted overalls are amazing and they are the go to for people working in Alaska. Not sure what they do to the duck twill stuff but it's like it cleans itself, mine trousers have gone from brown to a pale beige and you'd think they would show all the dirt but they don't.

We been to this place in Anchorage a few times, it's amazing shop with big stock levels. They have overalls rated to -50c for people working in Prudhoe Bay.

The problem is really need to try them on, as their stuff is pretty generous size wise but in my experience the staff in these places are very helpfull and would probably take some measurements and ship them and put something like "Safety clothing" on the label.
