Valve stem seals

I'm planning on doing this job next week with the heads still on the car.

I have a lever type tool to compress the springs but I've also just ordered one of these which could make the job easier as it leaves both hands free, but not yet sure if it will fit yet.

Looks like it may fit.

Anyway I came across this tool today but am not sure how it is supposed to be used, can't find any videos on it. Anyone know how its supposed to be used? Sealey VS1651

That Sealey valve collet tool looks like it must grab onto the collets & hold them together & the reverse is to slide them back down the valve. But I don't see how you would do that the spring compressor tool you've also shown us. As the normal valve spring compressors you use with the head off have enough access to refit the valve collets.

Never used one but this is how I think it's to be used...

Press as per red arrows which will open up the other end, put collets around shaft marked green and trap under the shaped bits arrowed in blue, notice how they are shaped like the collets. Put end of shaft arrowed in green against end off valve shaft and slide the the collets onto the valve shaft by allowing the shaft arrowed in green to slide up towards the tools red handle. I guess your expected to use oil or grease to "glue" the collets onto the valve shaft while you remove this tool and relax the valve spring.

Apologies if I'm telling you a load of bull carp.

It may be "sucking eggs" and all that, but you can stop the valve dropping in by breaking an old spark plug China bit off & welding a air line fitting to it, turn the engine to tdc on that cylinder & connect the compressor to pressurise the cylinder. I've also heard of it being done by feeding cord down through the plug hole & then turning to tdc.

Or, a suitably bent piece of rod with a spade end inserted through the plug hole to prevent the valve dropping?

Bought loads of these so called “make the job easier” tools. Some Ive been pleasantly suprised at how well they work but the majority I class as just making a contribution to the toolmakers profits with little in return. The old tried & tested which do the job are what I tend to use.

If you're using the "rope trick" to hold the valves in place, this type of valve spring compressor might be easier to use.

In the past I have cobbled up a similar tool from bits of scrap steel to change a broken Small Block Chevy valve spring by using the rocker mounting stud as the pivot/anchor for the lever.

That is the tool I used last time, tricky to use as it leaves you single handed. Any way I picked up the one in the top pic for only £6 so not a disaster if I can't fit it in.

What's the point in rope?

If the piston / cylinder being worked with is at tdc, surely the valve is going nowhere? (On an interference engine)

Because you need every mm you can get Julian, the springs would bind long before the valve retainer was pushed down enough to release the collets.

^ Even with the piston at TDC the valve will still drop enough that you won't get the collets back on without lifting the valve which you can't because you're trying to do this without removing the head.

I did this but didnt have a valve in it,
Unfortunately the compressor triped out and dropped pressure.

Now on only use the ball of string techniques.

I have a s̶n̶a̶p̶o̶n̶ yank version which is for slightly bigger valves/collets , its the other end of the tool with a magnet for removal.



The other end has a tip that is sprung loaded





These really are a great tool for inserting collets on valves on OHC engines where the valves are inside follower bores. If you get the spring compression height bang on there is no need for grease because you can withdraw the tool as you release the valve spring compressor if that makes any sense. The valve retainer pushes the tool away as you release the valve spring and the clamping effect keeps the collets in place until then..
