Workplace holidays

i have recently been on the lookout for a new job. It seems that companies are increasingly putting restrictions on when employees can take their holidays and how long that can have off at one time.

Just wanting to know if this is a common thing across the board or is it something I’m finding in this particular area / industry?

I’ve read of a lot of industries going this way, also limiting the number of employees that can book holidays in the same month etc.

why's that ridiculous?



if there's 20 staff and 5 decide to have the same 2 weeks off the other 15 are left in the crapper

same if it's 5 and 2, or 200 and 50

it's all well and good wanting you're two weeks off in the sun but it's not much good if the company has gone to crap while everyone is away (missed orders, low production, backlogs etc. etc.)

My wife use to work for the local paper, there was a ban on anyone taking holidays in December. Was a right PITA as it stopped us going anywhere like back to Oz for Chrissie. Quite often 2 weeks is the longest you can take without special approval from a manager, I've never had an issue getting three weeks off to go back to Oz though. I occasionaly get asked to change a day off as something has come up which I need to deal with, which is fine as long as it goes both ways that sort of thing.

When young I worked for a couple of years in the pottery industry where everybody took the same holidays and you had no choice. The whole of the industry, every factory and supplier, closed down. Locally we still call the period "Potters Hollidays" and it's last week in June, the first week in July and another week in August.

Banking was like that 50+ years ago, choice of dates [2 x weeks first] started with the Manager then down the pecking order. When everyone had their pick [certain Staff members weren't allowed to be absent at the same time] it came round again for the choice of residual entitlement. It wasn't much fun being an Office Junior in those days...

A company I looked at last year when job hunting had an unrestricted number of holidays policy - ie you weren’t limited to 2 or 3 weeks or whatever throughout the year. It’s an interesting concept. I think a couple other companies are trying it too. I guess it relies on a “looking after your colleagues” attitude to work well.

Apart from the occasional firm who did a full shut down I don't think I have worked anywhere that did not have some form of leave percentage allowance to ensure the business ran smoothly.

It's nothing new, been like that for years and will continue like that for a lot more years.

Last place I was an employee worked like that. At the beginning of the holiday year, the three of us. (I was the driver, they were the lab glass washers, who covered the driving if I was off). had to work out who wanted what holiday when, and how long.

That was the standard company policy in the late eighties, early nineties.

Last week in July, first week in August was always Sheffield Works Weeks.......everybody had their holiday at the same time...when I was a kid we always went to Cayton Bay near Scarborough in a Caravan that my Parents jointly owned....just about everyone there were the families of workers from Brown Bayleys Steels....they worked together all year and then went on holiday together.

In my trade was a months notice whenever and 2 weeks for Xmas shut down.

These days I don't get holidays but still switch off for Xmas.

When I first worked at a car main dealer we couldn't have the last two weeks of july or the first two weeks of august off due to the new registrations coming out.

Don't get the logic.
Work harder and a lot more hours self employed.
Yes I can take time off when I like but one income family keeps me working as much as poss.

Vehicles are being expensive as ever keeping me working flat out to pay for.

I did the opposite.....my Family were all self employed and I saw the pitfalls so I decided employement was best for me

The summer was tough but work has picked up now it’s colder, I’m also looking at some interesting projects like connecting a well to the water supply of a house to flush the toilets and connect to the washing machine, never got that when employed

I know what I need to earn to cover cost, to “manage” and to have a decent living, as long as I manage some months and earn more other months then I’m happy

I think the key is to work just enough to cover your costs & future retirement.

I find too many people putting work before their physical & mental health.

Family first is my priority, You can never buy that time back!

But back to the topic of Holidays, I've just requested 3-4 weeks off work to travel round Europe next year, So will wait & see...

My last employer once told me I had to put work first, told him family comes 1st, 2nd and 3rd in my house and he was a distant 4th at best

I take it you also told him where to stick it?

We have restrictions on number of staff off at the same time so we can still provide an effective service, not just for the troops but management as well.

2 weeks notice required and you can buy extra days leave if required, the deduction from your salary is then spread over the remainder of the financial year
