What tool do I need?

I need a new circular see as the one I have is cheap and old and too small!
It's only a 140mm blade with a small depth of cut.

I've just had to rip down a 6" joist to 5" and although it worked I had to really shove it along and finish off with a hand saw.
What's a decent new saw that can do this?

First thing you need to establish is whether or not that one is fitted with a rip saw blade. Such a thing does exist, most regular blades will be cross cut...

Blades are more important than the saw.
Freud I've had good results with.

Re the guide. Look to the front of the foot. A slot either side to take a bent metal fence. Easy enough to make

as above a rip saw blade is best. less teeth and more clearance next best is a multi use blade

But if you want a new saw i can recomend the festool ones, they are very expencive, but boy is it good

that saw blade looks old could be blunt and yet your tearing it to pieces

a circular saw is good can be used on most things sometimes better than a table saw

Thanks guys, a friend has Festool stuff but it's a bit rich for me! I've had that little saw for years and it's great but I need a larger one, as for ripping along to grain I don't think I'll be doing much of that so I'm assuming a normal blade will do for me.

Open them up. There no different to the other big brands your paying for the service which is top notch. Especially when damaged.

My favourite skill saw is an old hitachi. Picked up a couple recently to build one good saw from.

Just use a low tooth count blade for odd bits

I bought a cheap DIY shed own brand, think it was "Performance" hoping it would last long enough to board out a loft, it came with a spare blade. That was in 2005, it completed the loft job and has been used many times since and I still haven't had to fit the spare blade so I think it was £30 well spent.

Likewise. My 55 is gutless and becomes very obvious when blades get tired. Cuts like that I'd done 3 passes on the fes.
Dewalt seems to have a lot more grunt but poor design on things like angle changing and depth setting pee me off

A few people i have spoken to recently have said the newer saws feel under powered when use for deep cuts close to the full capacity in comparison to older ones.

Yup and the old ones are underpowered anyway.

They refuse to up the power as they want people to buy the ts75 for extra grunt.

if i was doing a shed build id invest in a chopsaw the table saw comes in handy for cutting down long pieces great with the guide on it

@Burdekin there his tools but id invest in the aldi table saw might even try the circular saw out

both the above tools have there uses but i still prefer the circular saw to a degree

Tracksaw has all but replaced my skilly these days other than ripping firings and the like.
For narrow repeatable cuts or sizing timber the table saw wins hands down but spends most if its life in the lockup unused.

Couldn't live without a decent double bevel mitresaw though.

Not surprised you're having problems,no one else noticed its decking the OP is cutting,got to remember that stuff is injected(sort of) with a preservitive that when cut/heated clogs a blade,its not your normal pine you know

I have an Hitachi, c7sb2. Plenty of guts, pretty light, fairly accurate base plate. Used it to rip cut wet 8x2 joists down, even ripped some proper sleepers (cutting from both sides and then the remainder with a handsaw).


Think the rebadged Hikoki still do that model.

As said though, the blade is the important bit.
