Magneto help

Father in law always kept his old Allis Chalmers one in the AGA bottom oven in the winter, took about 10 minutes to fit, don't know the model it was Orange & front wheels close together

Presume 4-oven, bottom left!
Two oven a bit hot so mine is in the airing cupboard with the welding rods!

Problem is it came with loads of spares almost a couple more complete engines, but we need another magneto to get one running, I know nothing at all about them so any help?
The engine is a Stuart for a pleasure boat / boating lake boat we are told they came from a place in Chester who upgraded to newer ones.

thats a,lucas Sr 1 magneto rotating magnet type . A lot later than the engine. these were a modular type magneto in various guises eg 1,2,4 cyl for matchless motorbikes to fordson tractors
the coil is held in by 2 slot head grub screws on top ,generaly pretty bullet proof , check for dirty points , duff condensor by subtituting another one it dosent need to be mounted inside as long as its conected and earthed to the mag ,the coil should read about 4.5 k ohm if its not rotted away check between disconnected points lead and brass button on coil that touches tang on the cover

you could run it as a dizzy with total loss battery and coil but make sure if it has an impulse coupling its working if not it will fire on full advance and kick back violently

there are points inside like a normal distributor......so check they are clean (nail emery pad will do, I'm sure u've all got 1 in ur make-up bag)......hahaha

once cleaned needs a 12-15 THOU GAP, take the plug out and give the engine a spin with the plug reconected but laying on the head or engine metal....
no spark u'll need to get it checked out......
they loose their mgnatism over time and suffer real bad with damp......some times they'll come back if kept in a nice warm place.......also do a rough check on the timing and of course make sure the points are opening and closing.....magnetoes can fall apart inside but not that often......
there's plenty of magneto rebuilders around, check em out in the Classic Bike mags etc.....
have converted a bad magneto useing the points to fire a normal ign coil in the past.........

i have played around with magnetos since 12 years old and got fed up waiting months and paying a fortune ,so i eventualy sourced the machinery and all the stuff needed
and do my own
its a bit of a chew as the wire is very fine and you have to add insulating paper between each layer then dunk it in a vessel of polyester varnish pull a vacuum on it then bake it for a few hours to do it proper

ive had dry wound coils from so called specialists fail on me

A friend was quoted £600 to recon his magneto recently and when he got it back
they had de -magnetised it

base to spindle centre "
the taper on shaft ,and the direction of rotation the lucas you have fitted Sr1 turn up at autojumbles and ebay regulary

Thanks for all your help, just trying to find out what it should be fitted with or just a cheap one so we can get his spare engine going as he got enough spares to build a few more with it, bot no Magnetos or exhaust manifolds

Now having looks at cost and being very tight could I not fit some sort of electronic ignition from something else?

Stationary engine mags (no advance retard) don't make much money on eBay. Usually the seller won't know if it works though so "pig in poke" time. I did wonder about using the flywheel and mag coil from a scrap strimmer to make a mag, but at the prices old stand alone mags make, it isn't worth the hassle. The Royal Enfield 350 started out with an old type mag, and Enfield India make a conversion that bolts in it's place for coil ignition. I would guess it will be quite expensive though.

The sandal wearing, pop-pop collective will be pleased to know that a twin cylinder JAP stationary engine rewarded my mocking by nearly snapping my fingers the other day at work, and then true to castrate me by spitting the handle at me

sounds like timing is too far advanced
make sure the impulse coupling is working
they have a similar set up on some aero engines the mag armature lags behind while the springs wind up so ign is retarded
then armature flies forward giving a big spark engine fires and pawls retract giving full advance a great idea when working but springs give up or it falls to bits thats when
it bites so no thumbs over handle

Yep it’s already on its way to being in bits, not something we usually work on but it’s from a long term customer so the boss said he would take a shufty. One cylinder has no compression either so that’s not helping

Parallel, believe it’s a model 55. I haven’t had much to do with it, it was just a brew time faff about last Friday when it came in to see if it could be coaxed back into life

had one of these in bits when i was about 12 the governer bob weighs on the end of the magneto gear had sheared the studs and were in the sump it has an impulse coupling i can remember turning the magneto gear when it suddennly tripped and i got a heluva shock
it was on a portable saw,bench
