how clean is *your* shed?

No paint and more than just spammers but timber on wall is so handy just stick another screw in and hang the next tool

Not painted but a most efficient couple of boards as I can find what I need and know where it goes.

all my gear gets used out in the field and all on clips .spanners and sockets in toolboxes and cabinets all cleaned after use and nothing will go missing . not much cop if its on a board in the garage unless that's the only place you work and hardly do much. I have about 4 sets each of all spanners and sockets from brittool to snapon if I need them at work or home

I don’t do shadow boards because they look awful especially you lose a tool.
I’ll freely admit it I’m terrible for keeping my things clean, in order and homed. I clean as I go and I don’t leave things laying about. I hate cables laying around more than anything and I can’t stand oily swarf. Is it counter productive well yes to the degree I take it, it probably is but hey I know where my stuff is so it works.

Keeping a tidy workshop isn’t counter productive at all. Doesn’t take long to clean what you’ve used and the mess you’ve made if you keep on top of it. Saves you searching for a tool, or having to clean all the crud off it when you do go to use it. Also means you can access all tools and machinery, as and when you need.

I'm a clutterer, without a shadow of a doubt, (mainly due to space versus content issues), but one thing I can't stick is muckiness. Tools are brushed or wiped down after use, I'll dust things when I move or use them, I'll clean crap from taps, dies, files, drill bits etc. after use, and always clear up swarf, filings, wood dust etc. after doing something. Being well ordered doesn't necessitate being clutter free, or everything being laid out to perfection.

Not gonna lie if I’m after doin a 15hr shift and I’m coming in the next day to continue on with the rest of the job in the workshop I’m not gonna clean that night il leave it there continue on and clean up when I’m finished.
Clean workspaces are more productive but there also unused when there spotlessly clean. There’s days I walk outa work and need a snooze in the van before driving home never mind cleaning up .
As regards spanners in the shed on a board there the ones I leave there iv also a set in both vans and in the job at home do I like the board as if I see a spanner or hammer missing il know too either find it or replace it before the next job

I see that as something that suits you and has evolved over time as needs must. I’m happy with that as it works for you. Most of the posts on this thread I see as a snapshot in time of people’s workplace or home workshops, I suspect finances and needs play a major factor over what is best.

Henry that's a very interesting workshop. I actually need an area for welding. At the moment all I have is a fold up welding table.

Good afternoon Carl, here is mine self made. originally 1220 by 2440, then first job it was too narrow, hence the 600mm extension. Now it is OK, main top plate is 16mm, extension is 10mm, damm thing weighs about 700+kg. Holes in the top are 16mm for the hold down clamp posts to fit into and there's about 650+ holes. You can imagine it did take a while to produce. The biggest job I do 'at the moment' is 2400mm in diameter so the 1800mm wide is just OK.

All the tidy people saying that everything is put away and they know exactly where it is, well I am untidy and yet I still know where everything is.
I don't have enough room in my workshop to put everything away tidily, if I do then things are stacked and it takes me longer to get to things I need and then to put it all back again would take more time.
I find it hilarious at the pious nature of some tidy people, I don't take a fit when I see someone who keeps a tidy workshop and don't preach to them that they shouldn't. It is the way they work and feel comfortable with so good on them. I am the opposite, I thrive in clutter especially when it is of my own making. I am the only person that works here so no one needs to come behind me and tidy up.

One observation I have made over the years is those people that are fastidious about everything having its place, well they tend to struggle when they have to work in a cluttered environment, I have yet to meet an untidy person who has difficulty working in a tidy environment.


Every one to their own and if anyone tries to preach to me about how I work they can go and jump in the sea, preferably in the middle of winter with a force 10 South Easterly

Fair enough @Hood and there is nothing wrong with that. I only have a small brain so for me its best to put everything away at the end of play, the main reason for this is I may well not be coming back to whatever I was doing the next day or even week and by the time I do I will be struggling to find things. So for me its tools cleaned/put away and things I have pulled apart/worked if unfinished are also boxed up or put away. Took a few years to retrain but its worth it for me.

Oh but I am similar, if I am working stripping something down it is placed in a box or a tub and often bagged to keep muck out for me to come back to at a later point, often with a note in saying where to find the photos of it on my computer in various stages of disassembly..
Spanners, allen keys, sockets etc are all put back in their drawer etc as they have a place and I have room to have a place for them. Same with Micrometers, verniers, callipers etc, they all have their home but my workshop still looks a mess to the untrained eye, I much prefer to call it organised chaos

The reason I posted my “mobile” workshop is the shed is atrocious. It had to serve about 29 different purposes but if I need to do a job in there it is possible, one the bikes, lawnmowers etc are chucked out

Yep, cleaning up after each job, having a place for each tool, sweeping out the workshop after each job or at the end of the day is just good practice. The best tradesmen are the guys who take pride in what they do, look after their stuff, clean up after themselves and finish off the job. Tidying up is part of the job. We all get untidy to different levels, but my workshop is a more enjoyable space when it is clean and tidy.

As I said earlier if someone likes to be ultra tidy I have no issues with that, it is their way of working and it suits them and keeps them happy doing their work but it always seems to be these "tidy" people that are opinionated and tell everyone else how they should do things, maybe it makes them feel superior.

If I go to work on a boat I clean up after me, if I work in the boatyards workshop I put things back where I got them, when I am in MY workshop I do as suits me because guess what, it is my workshop and it works better for me when I do that

The problem is when you only have one space be it a garage or a shed, or a small workshop, you still have to put garage and shed things in there.

In the workshop, there’s bloody strimmers, chainsaw, brooms, shovels, sometimes the mower, all squeezed in.
Then I’ve got the buckets to wash the car, cleaning products, etc etc.

You guys must have the same problems?

If anything our garage is cleaner, but that’s because I moved everything out to convert it into a dwelling but that got put on a back burner.
