Thinking of getting a MK2 Jaguar

I have always fancied a Mk2 Jag just so i had an old classic with a few refinements, I am just wondering if anyone has experience or can point out the pitfalls, I am not sure of my budget but i am looking for something that can be road ready pretty easy.

Hidden rust holes, mechanically simple but a nightmare to work on, you will require welding and metal folding equipment, all the normal garage equipment, engine crane, axle stands and all sorts of other equipment.

And having to remove the rear axle to change the rear inboard brake pads. Can involve major welding to axle mounting brackets.

There's a very good reason a decent condition MK2 costs a fortune. Having owned a 420 manual with wire wheels, many years ago. A wonderful car but can be a right real pain in the ar*e to repair or restore.

If your thinking of doing the bodywork repairs to do the job properly you will need to learn how to lead fill the body repairs.

Doubtless the restoration of a Mk2 Jaguar would present many real challenges but removing the rear axle to change the disc brake pads will not be one of them, the Mk2 has a live rear axle with outboard disc brakes. There was a prototype fitted with IRS and inboard discs but I'd think it unlikely that vehicle still survives.

S-Type has the IRS with inboard rear discs and is a much nicer car to drive. Not that I'm prejudiced of course.
Identical to MkII from A to C pillar.
Front subframe same as 420 and XJ.
Usually cheaper than a MkII.

Most will have an access hatch cut in the floor pan under the rear seat squab to access the inboard discs for pad changes. Original calipers and discs are Dunlop, but straight swap to any 420 and XJ including Series III V12.

Everything is man sized and heavy. These days I struggle just to change a wheel on my 420, especially the partially shrouded rears.

Budget at least £25k to buy and restore MkII, S-Type, 420. More for MkI.

I know that car well, It has been to the Shelsley Hill sprint club on display and it was built in Bridgnorth near me, It really does look amazing close up, But maybe just a few £££ out of my budget , I have seen a few rust buckets with silly prices but walked away just based on £15,000 for a rust bucket with missing parts, I am sure a honest car with less work will be out there.

Sadly, I suspect you'll find that most have already been bought and restored. An old friend used to have one and swore the 3.4 engine was the one to have.

If you shop around they are out there t a reasonable price. 3.8 is the better engine as it came with a limited slip diff - but you pay a heavy premium for them. Look out for rotten sills and doors.

Join the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, the magazine is a good place to look for adverts and they run 2 spares days a year where you can buy a lot of the new or second hand parts and other supplies, they are held at the NAC.

The Daimler or a 240 / 340 can be a cheaper option, but the 2.4 engine is a little underpowered (depends how you are going to drive it though). The thinner bumpers are a lot easier to fit than the earlier wide bumpers which are an absolute sod.

My friend has a Mk 2 in his stable of cars, his is an ex South African car so fairly free of rot.
I drive it regularly, easy to drive as an everyday car apart from the steering is heavy as no power steering.
It's lovely when you floor the accelerator but the fuel guage does go down alarmingly fast!

I like the way they have piled the praise on Ian Callum with no mention of where his inspiration has come from, namely the Coombs Jag of the mid sixties. They were pulling the arches, fitting wide wheels, playing with engines and brakes on old Jags way back .

Used to work with a mechanic friend who had one Any mechanical work he did for me and I did his body work. I think you can guess who got the best of the arrangement nighon rebuilt the d¥¥m thing

lead filling is not what its cracked up to be the flux festers away under the lead and rots the metal to lace seen it lots on xks . 70s rollers were realy bad sometimes half an inch deep modern fillers a much better job
mk2 bodys absolute rust buckets only consolation panels are readily available
better buyin a restored one a veritable money pit

Did the interior on a xk150 a while back, drivers door was 10mm longer than the passengers on the outside yet 10mm shorter on the inside!
