Painting Question

Decorating the lounge at the moment, new house (well 12 months old), painting the ceiling for the first time since the builders did it. Using matt emulsion.

First coat dried patchy, assumed the ceiling sucked up a fair bit of paint - did it a second time and its dried the same. The ceiling is about 8m x 4m and sucked up 5L in two coats.

Am i doing something wrong, does it just need another coat, should i use silk?

Paint was brand new, but i had it for maybe 18 months. Is this the problem?

I've always used a sealer coat on plasterboard or plaster before applying paint, mind you often just a thinned down emulsion as the sealer or diluted PVA.
I find cheaper emulsions take many more coats to give an acceptable finish whereas spend more on the paint and less time actually applying it.

Some say new plaster should be sealed before painting but I always just use up any light coloured emulsion thinned with roughly 25% water and always use a roller for a more even spread, two coats usually makes it ready for the final finish.

use a decent make contract emulsion. cost about 30 quid a bucket. thin the 1st coat . don't use vinyl silk it shows every imperfection . if u buy contract and its under 25 quid its crap . been there and got the teeshirt

On bare plaster always use a couple of "peas" coats first, otherwise your paint will peel off in strips a year down the line. Cheap and nasty paint is your friend for the first few coats. Top off with a quality brand of your choice.

Oh and watch out for the isocyanates...

The ceiling had already been painted by the builders no issues with bare plaster - it just seems to be sucking up paint and coming out patchy

i strain out the isocyanates with an old colander.

Ours was a new build. 5 coats in some rooms before the colour was solid. Not cheap paints either. I could imagine ceilings being the same.

On small places/areas you could use thinned out normal oil based undercoat go straight over whats on it,but will need time to dry and stink for a while
Once its dried bang on your emulsion,8mx4m is a big area though

Fresh plaster will suck up an amazing amount of moisture which is why the very thin coats are so important. Once it stops sucking up, paint with the good stuff.

i belive a lot of paining in new houses are now sprayed wonderr if this is your problem ?

im not sure(as i never dont it myself) but was told by a builder if someone has painted oil baced paint on walls is to paint it with satin paint then normal emolsion paint works wonder if this would help you ?

I have been using matt masonry paint on ceilings and walls for years, It wipes easy and normally i only ever need 2 coats, I use sandtex if i can get it but the wickes stuff was ok, I have used cheap contracor stuff in the past but by the time you add up 5 coats and time its cheaper with better stuff.

I generally only use dulux trade emulsion now it has way more pigment in that the cheaper paints therefore you use less

I do use Dulux trade satinwood or eggshell on all the woodwork, It goes on so well with 1 coat and needs no primer.

I use to use that too just recently used wickes own label satin wood and that was great too,

No idea Painted it again with new tin of Dulux this afternoon, and its dried like streaky bacon again. The walls that I did last week are fine, the rollers good, i havn't missed bits or overly gone over bits twice. Dunno.

I would let it dry fully for a few days, Only time i had a bad result was when there was a a mix of silk and matt on a wall so the paint i was adding was drying at different speeds.

let it dry and see what it looks like, as above if it's drying at different speeds it will look patchy.

if all else fails paint it with zinser primer sealer and 2 coats of decent emulsion
