Job dilema

right, I have worked for a large oil company for 25 years...my bit was sold off. Im not happy with the job, shall we say its mind numbing and Im only here as there was no where else to go when I left Africa.

So since being sold off, Ive lost shall we say the golden handcuffs.

Anyway today I was offered something interesting in one of the less fashionable foreign lands. Similar money.

So north sea board, or sunshine as a contractor. Opinions, kill time for a Year frustrated in a job I hate, or go for another overseas adventure to one of the worlds less desirable destinations, working slightly more days.

Seriously... if it's safe then why not? I often wished I had taken up offers for work abroad when younger, once you are no longer younger it's not as easy to see the world.

My current thinking reminds me of the film "Risky Buisness", sometimes you just have to say what the hell beginning with F, and go for it.


Ive seen the world and came back, didnt like most of it but it does pay well, and is always an adventure.

Safe is a relative term. Though I dont forsee any issues on that front, well no more than usual for such places.

Right enough, O&G is getting more buoyant again but the rota's are garbage. Personally if you still had a good run to go, I'd say go for it, but with only a year to do, I'd say keep the head down, let the boredom wash over the top and ride it out. Even if it is mind numbing, it's easier with the devil you know, plus on a equal time rota North sea, got to be better than 75-21.
No adventures anymore, at least not where I'm stood, just more of the same, just sandy and hot.... Maybe I'm biased, I can't be bothered with all the months away from home / travelling / security / visas and all that associated tosh anymore, hence why I'm wrapping it too, but then again I've another 10 years to stretch out...

came home, buried my wife and left again.........this time, found a new wife (20 years) never leave her side, retired to a sunny spot and another move on the way........

In a similar boat. Job has been a challenge last couple of years as it hasn't been challenging but I know how lucky I am so no complaints. I also really enjoy Aberdeen and the lifestyle we have made here. I am being seconded to another company as I have been telling my boss I need more of a challenge, so let's see if that is still the case in a couple of months.

I spent a couple of weeks working in Qatar during Ramadan when it was 40c+ in the shade and not a beer to be had.

The memory of the cheer that came from all the passengers on the return flight when the cabin crew asked if anybody fancied a drink as the rear wheels left the tarmac and the taste of the G&T will stay with me forever

That went with the big oil company name, so thats banked and is actually enough to quit, but I want to finish building my holiday lets before I leave work.

I feel I have one more adventure left in me. Phoned home today to tell the mrs decision made. She said its the first time Ive sounded up beat about things in ages. So I shall spoil my bosses day tomorrow, will be a tough conversation as my back to back quit today too.

My hobbies are almost in order too I only have one or two big purchases left for the shed and maybe a new tractor, wonder if I can loose that on my LTD company.

@MCDAVID I dont do those rotations any more. If it aint 28 and 28 or less I dont go

Well took my already stressed boss for a closed door chat to discuss notice.....so thats it job done, he wants his full 3 months, I agreed on one more trip. Then off the Eygpt.
