Tea breaks.

i do a bit of self employed work for a welding company, I'm the only self employed chap, all,the others five of are on the books.

How many tea breaks is a employed person entitled to in a eight hour day, legally?

10 oclocks and dinner time most . some 3 oclocks .I just took em when I fancied and balls to the gaffer kicking off

But everywhere I have ever worked in engineering has had a ten minute tea break in the morning, usually at 9:30, a half hour lunch break, and ten minutes tea break in the afternoon, usually at 3:30, it used to also be common for the boys to get a drink any other time they fancied and take it to the bench, this is probably frowned upon nowadays in our new H&S culture.
I'm properly self employed in my own premises so I can make my teabreaks eight hours long if I feel like it.

Fill my flask cup up and crack on. Rather finish the job early and have usable time with the family. Or time in hand when things go awry. On the cards is a different matter. Take every break I can. Break lengths change when working over 8 hours iirc

I have always had a cuppa in a flask cup on the go while i was working so never really took a tea break or stuck to official times, Only had 1 employer moan and i was there for 4 weeks before i got another job, When he asked why i was leaving i said he was a moaner and guest what...he moaned.

I'm the same, being self employed it's crack on and get the job done before heading off to the next one. Cup of tea on the go and it's rare that I stop for lunch, I might grab a pie or a bun from a shop occasionally but the norm is to keep working.

Tea breaks are often good "thinking" time. Solutions to problems often become more readily apparent when away from the coal face.

I used to let my guys have a brew pretty much whenever and in the main they didn't take the Mickey. Sometimes when needed they would work through and other times they would be a bit lazy but on balance it evened out.

Managing people that are reasonably self motivated is like having twenty white mice on a round coffee table, generally they mill around the middle doing stuff and occasionally one or two will make a break for the edge. If you are quick and fair scooping them back to the middle all will be well, if you let them reach the edge the lot will scatter :-)

As a field service engineer I usually got tea and biscuits several times a day at my customers. Apart from Barclays Bank in Ilkley, I was sweating over a dead machine and they rolled out the tea & biccies ignoring me. So I stopped, told them if anyone rang for me I'd be in the cafe across the road, and walked out. Got tea & biscuits from that day on.

There is no entitlement to tea breaks but rest breaks are a legal entitlement although they can be altered by your contract.

tea breaks is whenever its decided to have them as long as the work gets done other than that

1 in morning and 1 half way through then dinner break one in afternoon then home

Half hour at 10 clock. Half hour at 1 clock. But being self employed I would take one when I felt like one. Machinery and plant don't run without diesel and I don't run without tea.

Self employed from home now, so breaks when I want to but I prefer to take them when I need to step away from a job and have a think.
I used to hate tea breaks when "proper" grafting on a job. When there was a squad of us on site, unsupervised, the breaks would drag on and I felt I lost a bit of momentum. I got bored.

Rarely offered tea and refreshments, but one time springs to mind. We were cabling a hospital in Glasgow. Office block after hours. The contact on site showed us into a meeting room where there had been refreshments served during the day and the scraps were left over. We were told to help ourselves. When I say "scraps", there was smoked salmon, cheesecake and all sorts of goodies. Whoever had attended the meeting had table manners. Not us. We properly got stuck into that banquet like we'd never seen food before. I made a point of tidying up after we'd finished as one of the engineers had scraped the cheesecake topping off and put the base back on the plate because he didn't like it.

I have a 1.5 Litre insulated mug, one fill in the morning keeps me going until lunch, then another in the afternoon. Also 20min break in morning, 40 min lunch, 15mins in afternoon, but usually busy at breaktimes. (Engineering College)

Whenever there was a sales presentation in the office there was always food left over which the staff finished off. It was tough on the engineers out doing calls though.

Once go so bored on a site I went sweeping up, everyone else waited 4 hours for the delivery
