Get a nut that fits the thread, cut it in half, clamp it together above the damage and unscrew.
The big benefit of this method is that you are not removing any material from the item you are repairing, just displacing it back to where it should be.
Can I improve your method just a little please?
Don't cut the nut in half. Cut all the way through one side, and just the depth of the thread on the other.
Bend the nut open with a screwdriver, install, clamp it shut with a thumb-detecting-nut-fusker and wind it off.
That way the split nut can't fall under the bench as you reach for the spanner.
