Tool grinding essentials

I don't claim to be an expert. I ground a tool today from a piece of HSS to do a job.

I feel the picture shows that I had all the right gear for an afternoon in the workshop.

Co-incidentally, that was what I spent my time on today - grinding an internal boring tool to open up a bore, not having the exact size drill I needed, or a reamer.

Yeah that looks excellent! Stealing that idea

I wanted to do some welding grinding today but i just cleaned the car how do you guys manage to keep the dust down?

In my old place i had a small store room i used for all the grinding welding etc keeping all the dust off the familys junk stored on shelves and more importantly the car.

I don't usually, but I go round the bench [and the 'fittings & fixtures' ] afterwards with either a brush & dustpan or the hoover.
Luckily, I'm far away from the important things like lathe, welder, Evo Rage saw etc - well, I hope I am...... Welder spends it's life under a cover and the Myford, esp the bed, gets wiped down.

The grinder is mounted to an aluminium plate that then has an aluminium angle welded to it. That then goes in the vice.

I clean up after anything I do in my workshop. Because of the training I had it is second nature to me. I cover up when grinding. Lathe, rotary table etc. I don't grind that much and grinding the hss didn't make much sparks. Any angle grinding etc gets done outside, well away from anything in the workshop.

I use a take-away tray filled with water under the wheel I am using, collects a lot of the dust/debris and allows keeping the tools cool.

Keep the car and the family junk else where. Freezer curtain works very well for having a clean and dirty area. Though mine doesnt as its still on the roll waiting to get put up.

Swarf is the other thing, no matter how careful you are, and clean up, swarf still gets everywhere.

Especially when you are making the dreaded long stringy chips and the chuck picks them up and starts liberally spreading them throughout the workshop at 500 rpm...

My foot is always right next to the kick stop.

Change the tool to not get the long stringy chips, easier said than done unless your using tipped tools

One tool grinding essential is a dressing tool. It could be a wheel, a diamond or a dressing stick but if you intend grinding HSS you'll find it very hard going once the wheel goes blunt.

Changing the insert doesn't always work to stop stringy chips, especially not with aluminium. I changed to CCGT which are designed for ally, have some top rake and a chipbreaker and even then only produce decent chips with heavy cuts. For a finishing pass you have to just do the best you can.

Agree about dressing the grinding wheel.

Thinking back, when I was a lad and my dad ran a car repair business from home, his garage always seemed to have a Pirelli calendar or similar on the wall...
