New TV..........

Well as its Xmas time (Well not anymore but you know what I mean..........) I have decided to buy a new TV!

I have never had a LCD or Plasma TV before, so does anyone have any reccomendations? I have seen a nice shiney new Sony model with 200Hz motionflow technology..........(Supposed to be the dogs dangleys apparently) but they are pretty expensive........RRP about £1800, best price on the Net about £1300-£1400.

Does anyone have any opinions on TV's........are you better off spending as much as you can afford initially with a view to keeping it for a few years or what?? :dontknow:

Lcd is better than plasma...
The image on lcd is better than on plasma...
But, blimey they ARE expensive!

Sony tellys are good. I bought mine from eBay (it was about 5 years old right at the start of the digital age, but with the whole trinitron and wega caboodle whatever they are so nice picture).

It's cathode ray so a bit thick, but that brings the telly closer to the watcher so you can get away with a smaller screen. :laughing:

Wouldn't buy one new. Prices are way too silly.

nahh jus kidding, id go for an lcd, much less blockey picture than plasma, go to your local aldi, if i can remember right a while ago they were selling 50 inch things for about 800 quid with 3 years warranty (you could buy 2 :laughing:

)so you cant go wrong really, or are you a guy for the big brands? :laughing:

there all much of a muchness i feel as long as it works they go out of date before they break unless your at home all day then they die yearly.

Interesting one. I looked into one a bit for my parents (as in on their behalf

) and reached a few general conclusions/observations. First is that the price seems to jump massively once you pass 42". Second is to make sure you get one with 1080p (sometimes called 'full HD') as this will give you the full benefit of HD. Third, plasma still has a better contrast ratio than LCD so the blacks will be blacker. Sounds like a small thing but makes a big difference to movies. Lastly and with regards to price, I reckon you want to head mid-market. The tech moves fast enough that you're pretty well guaranteed to be looking for a new one before the current one starts to show it's age. On the other hand you do want a good one and not tat. Oh, also look at the number of HDMI sockets. If you've got any of a PS3 or XBox that'll be one, Blu-ray or upscaling DVD will be another plus a Sky HD box another. Any top-name brand will be similar to any other.

We bought a 32" LCD last year for 500€ which was under £400 back then...

Personally wouldn't spend any more than that on a TV, and if you need a bigger screen just sit a bit closer.

Looked at a Sony HD one which apparently has a 'better' screen, but the cheaper LG one next to it looked like a much better picture to us, on analogue tv, digital tv and HD DVD, so we bought the LG.

My advice would be turn the red colour down when you are comparing them as they usually have it set far too high in the shops, get them to plug in the same tv and dvd signals to all the tv's your interested in and choose for the one that you think has the better picture.

PS I'm not saying Sony aren't good. Our other TV is a Sony (CRT) and that's really good. If you like the Sony one get the Sony one :cool:

I got a 26" LG LCD for xmas , does everything i want of it , my old tv was a26" too . i dont see the need to go massive :whistle:

....therres more to life than sitting in front of the box (ok so now its a very slim box :laughing:

)

just got to get a freesat box now to get the HD

To be honest i think you will be ok with any decent brand name ..... its like buying a welder you buy a decent make not some cheap c#i#e#e rubbish :whistle:

And since you've all posted while I was typing I'll just have to say I disagree that LCDs are better. :fighting:

Yes, they're thinner and lighter than plasma and, yes, they are far less power hungry but, IMO, the picture on a plasma is much better. The Pioneers are particularly good but particularly pricey!

I found a forum, for TV's and the like and some of what they guys say on there ref, colour tones and lag rates etc etc is frankly well over my head :laughing:

This particular TV, is the first (and only at the moment) that is 200Hz, apparently all others are 100Hz.

I am a bit of a name/brand freak I suppose, but I am more of the type of person who will try and buy the best/most advanced available if I can afford it........I am thinking, whats the point in buying a 720 TV, when now its all 1080.........and now I am thinking is it worth buying a 100Hz TV, if someone has already moved on too 200Hz?? :rolleyes:

I know that by the time I have got it home and set up it will probably be outdated and someone will have a 300Hz on the way but I am not planning on changing year on year to keep up (I still have Cathode ray TV), just want to know peoples opinions on buying best available at the time aslong as it falls in your budget.

Other dilema is for that price, I could get a much larger screen (Prob 46") if I went for other brand 100Hz........but then I have to think would my front room take a TV that size!! Decisions decisions haha

) but when it comes to things like cameras and TVs I get a bit lost as they all offer such similar things. People will bang on about the hue and saturation of this screen compared to that screen etc but really there's no substitute to having a good look. With regards the 200 Hz, there's no way that having it can hurt. It will mean that there will be virtually no motion blur at all. However, would it make enough of a difference to justify the extra cash? Personally, I think not but that's only a hunch. I'd spend the extra on a bigger screen or, in these troubled financial times, keep it in the bank.

I have seen one at a comet clearance shop by me at the moment its up for £1400 (Been returned and has slight scratch on it), however I know that at this place they are able to go up to a maximum of 50% of the list price as discount, this would mean that I might be able to get it for about £800-£900, if I can then I will get it, especially as I read somewhere that Sony are planning on a price increase of about 30% this year because of the tumbeling pound (I imagine anyone else who is importing will also have to, whatever the product is ) if not I will prob just go for a mid level Samsung or something for about £600ish..........will see what they have to say tommorrow at Comet clearance, depends how desperate they are for the sale :whistle:

One of the best around apparently is Pioneer Kuro.
Panasonic, Sony and Hitachi are the names to buy if youve got the budget for it, so im told by BIL. But look out for the budget models from all, supposed to be reliable, but quality isnt as good. Samsung and LG are good compromises.
I hear watching a cartoon is a good way to compare, nice block colours and plenty of black.

When our tele went bust i bought a 20" Goodmans lcd :laughing:

I dont care, i rarely watch it. Any bigger and its far too invasive imo.
As mentioned, if you cant see it, sit closer, or get glasses
