Cheap Die Grinder

The other day I knackered my old router that I had been using as a die grinder, so I went on the hunt for a new one.

Thought it was worth a punt at £27, and so far it seems pretty good.

Anyone else tried one?

Been looking for something like that for my stainless wire brush as it is a PITA in a drill. Only problem though it says no load speed 23,000 and the brushes are 15,000 max
Don't suppose it has variable speed? Doesn't mention it in the ad so I am guessing not.

That was one thing that made me think twice, though one of the cheap variable speed plug in jobbies would probably work ok? (be interesting to hear if anyone has done it already?)

Do you have a link to such a variable speed plug in thingy?. Was wondering if it would work on 110v and give me half the speed then thought it would be a pain to have to use on 110 via a transformer so knocked that idea on the head

eBay's your friend. Just about all of them are from China though.

I've heard of people using these (or similar at any rate) before - I would point out I've never actually used or owned one so it's only a suggestion, hence my question if anyone has used one before on a die grinder and if so what are the results like.

Only 300W though and the grinder is 380w. Suppose both are Chinese so likely both will be overstating the wattage but wonder which one will be overstating by the most

Ah ok, might be worth a try I suppose, not a huge loss if it doesn't work although I suppose I will also have a die grinder that isn't much use

I think I may have mislead you with "plug in" but you could certainly knock up a small adaptable box with one in easy enough.!

Yes, might give it a go, as you say easy enough to make up an adapter.

The rate you knock stuff up it'd be a 5 minute job. It would be a 6 month project for me

the air ones are more speed controllable without loosing power smaller and more versatile

Yes, fine in the workshop if you have an air supply, not so handy on a boat round the harbour though.

Nope. Not variable speed. I think it's a brushed motor so one of the gadgets that have been mentioned should work ok.

With regard to the stated speed, my first impression was that it was not hitting the claimed 23k, just going on the sound of the thing. Certainly works ok, but it don't sound as fast as the router that I used before.

Thanks, might get one and see what RPM it is doing (think my mechanical tacho goes that high) then decide on whether I need to slow it down or not.
