Shutz or Cavity Wax Gun...?

Since I need to apply cavity wax and Gravitex, I wondered rather than buy a Shutz gun would a cavity wax gun like this https://www.tool-net.co.uk/p-371419/sealey-sg18.html?gclid=CMyMvbCo5dQCFa-87Qodwm8EyQ would do job the for both coatings ? Or perhaps a pressure pot is a better idea?

Also could someone explain the difference between a Shutz, cavity wax and pressure pot? All this equipment is very new to me!

Ive only ever used wax oil but that gun uses a lot of air. Itll need a chunky sized compressor

the gun you linked to is ideal for cavity wax - far nicer to use than a shutz gun , it wont spray gravitex

I've been using a sg18 gun for spraying cavity wax for 20 years, it does a decent job with cavity wax. I wouldnt try it for spraying stone chip or shutz, as the guns for that are cheap enough anyway (less than £15). also cleaning the SG18 between spraying cavity wax and stonechip would be very messy. if you use them of cavity wax only you dont need to clean them, just make sure the tubes are empty.

I've recently purchased a Wolf 90 ltr Dakota, I don't what it's free air capability is but it is rated as 14.5 CFM compressor. Do you think it'll cope??

no there wern't the cheaper plastic bodied ones available 20 years ago.

there are also these available but dont know if they are pressurised and are cheaper than the sealey ones.

and there is this video on youtube of a gun using the sealey one to spray bitumen paint.

utimately no-one has all the answers for you, you'll have to see for yourself and make your own decisons about what works for you

Hey, I have the Sealey SG18 and it runs off a small £100 compressor for me. The only problem I find with it is the styrene seal between the pot and gun is rubbish. I just bought some rubber o-rings which I hope will fit instead.

I keep the SG18 on my shelf with Dinitrol High Solids wax in it. Every time I drill a hole or service anything I give it a quick spray of wax.

That will be 14.5 cfm displacment, ie how much going into the compressor, your free air delivery when the air is compressed will be about 9 cfm

Thanks for the YouTube link, wonderful I agree, this is about experimentation to which I do enjoy although it is nice to get other's opinions and their findings on such tools.

..which isn't a huge amount. Thanks for the info , I wasn't aware of that and the exact meaning of what free air is.

Its that one in the link above, and going by it's power rating I'd say the 9 CFM free air delivery is about right. Still it should do for the small jobs such as painting individual body panels and small areas.

Itll be fine with a touch up gun, all it means is youll have to stop now and again as the stored air in the tank depletes and the compressor cant keep up.

if you use LVLP (Low Velocity Low Pressure) spray guns like the FastMover FMT3006, they use less air than the compressor can supply so you can use them continiously to spray body panels or even a full car

I'm interested in the Sealey SG18 but here it states that consumption is 15 CFM. My Wolf Dakota 90 ltr only kicks out 9 CFM free air delivery. I'm guessing this is gonna be a problem? Though you have a smaller compressor than myself with no issues??

its not a problem, for spraying cavity wax you'll be spraying the wax for less than 25% of the time as you move the nozzle about from one place to another, its not something that is used continiously. I used mine with a 2.5 hp compressor with 25L receiver, and never had a problem with not having enough air.
