Lecktrickery question - 110v circuit in shed.

I just bought a 110v site transformer to power my new chop saw.
I'm also looking at buying a couple of 110v site tools (grinder, router, circular saw).
I'd like to wire up some permanent sockets in my 30ft x 12ft shed rather than have lots of swapping plugs + cables trailing about.
Can I just wire it up using 2.5mm t+e as a radial circuit from a plug into the transformer - max 6 sockets, 45ft cable length
That way, I can unplug the transformer to take to site, but also have the convenience of accessible sockets around the shop.
I'll run the cable in separate conduit to the 240v cable.
It's a one-man shop, so just one tool at a time (possibly two if I have "help")

yes just run a radial with 110 sockets round room and plug them in your tranny use yellow 2.5 3 core flex

id use yellow as it confirms is 110v not any other voltage being used on it

i have a few things for 110v including a chop saw 3 trannys and other tools that use 110v

Personally i would run in 2.5 flex or go to 4mm. In the event of a fault the earth core on a 2.5mm t&e is underside for 110v if no rcd on supply.
Its surprising how much damage can be done before a yellow portable box will give up.

Use an appliance inlet "socket" to feed the circuit so you just use a jumper cable that can be repaired/replaced easily.

Do you mean a short extension with a plug on both ends? So the transformer can be plugged into any socket?

This is to solve the "flex leading to failure" problem, not the "earth overheating" issue?


I was intending to have a short (2ft) length of flex connecting to a junction box and then running t+e solid core 2.5mm

Using a plug<->plug cable into any of the sockets would be a good idea[tm] I think.
Would running the fixed installation as a ring be a go-er? Easy enough to add an extra length of cable to connect the ends?
This would solve the "earth overheating" issue?

one of these on the wall near where the transformer is going to be situated and use a short extension that can be replaced easily

I wouldn't bother with a ring, a radial is just fine as long as the mcb/fuse feeding it is the correct rating.
mrfuzzy can you tell me what part of the regs say it's ok to use yellow flex on a 240 volt supply? I've never seen that before and I do a fair bit of 110 v stuff!

45 feet is only 1 standard lead length 2.5mm cable will run just about anything. We run 3.5kw motors off a couple or three 2.5mm leads turning foot-diameter diamond drilI's etc with no isues. I like the idea I'd using 110v in a workshop because it's only 55v potential to earth as opposed to 240v mains. If you have a fault it's a lot less hazardous.

You usually get about 60-69 volts to earth when measured!

2.5 T & E ring here, fr the extra cabel it didnt need makeing it a ring made sense as its effectivly 5mm then to any one point, it was orginaly fed by a short legth of 4mm flex into a junction box to the ring with a 16A plug on the other end , but that went out the window when i aquired a 5kw transformer the ring is now permatly wired in the T&E goes directly into the transformer.

In my experience most site agents don't know their **** from there elbow, only caring about getting the job done quick!
If there was 240 volt power in a yellow flex on site in London these days most of the dry liners / ceiling fixers would be dead as they love to cut the yellow stuff out of their way while it's live!

I will second the agents and H&S guys on site with out a clue.

Take a welder stick it on a 110v plug = All happy.
Take a welder stick it on a 230v plug ( 13a or blue) = Read the riot act, and not to use on site.
Take a welder stick it on a 415 plug = All happy.( if you tell then its the only way to do the job.)

Going back years we had this exact problem could not run a 230v supply to plasma, OK cant do job will come back with new machine. 2 hours later back with same machine but now with a red 415v plug wired as 230v 1p+N, and long 3 phase extension. Site H&S man now happy.

You can have 240 volt on site but not on a 13amp plug top. It has to be a 3 pin 16/32 amp blue commando socket plugged into an outlet WITH 30ma RCD protection.

in reality some sites its ok if the main contractor says no its his decision

I've seen a similar setup in a cellar once. I thought they were running from an isolating transformer as it was wall mounted, but on closer inspection it was all 110v gear

Where do you think it came from? although the factory was being stripped ready to sell, so it would only have gone in the skip.
