A local farmer asked me to a very small amount of welding for him. It is welding some bolts into a wheel hub. So the bolts go through some drilled holes and then the head of the bolt needs some weld around it to stop it turning in the hole.
The hub is from an old trailer and the bolts are brand new high tensile bolts. I belt sanded and blasted the areas where the heads of the bolts would sit on the hub surface. When I tried to weld it though most of the time there was a buzzing sound (like just the wire was melting) almost like the wire speed was too low and the wire was melting before properly arcing.
I tried turning the wire speed up and the power settings down one click but didn't seem to get anywhere. Once or twice I got a crackling normal weld sound. But the wire would then melt to the tip and stop the wire feed.
I am a little confused as to what I'm doing wrong. I don't know if it is the material of the wheel hub (possibly cast?), the brand new bolts (did I need to grind the bolt heads tothe outside coating?) or if I am doing something wrong. The only other thing I can say is that the wire then suddenly ran out so it was the last bit in the 5kg reel when doing this job.
