Being able to use both hands is (obviously depending on what type of work you do) sometimes a god send.
Some of the pipe spools ive worked on before now, there has been no way at all to manipulate the piece so its possible to weld all of it right handed.
Some tanks, especially with square corners rather than domed ends, much easier to weld left handed then right handed respectively, when welding into a corner as obvously cant manipulate a tank your inside lol.
Ive always been ok with this per se, although one thing i do struggle with even after a good few years at it is feeding filler rods with my right hand. Using and manipulating the torch with my left hand no problems.
Get two pieces of 2" pipe in 6g position and i have no idea how somebody would weld both sides right handed tbh. Have tried and just cannot do it lol
In the post above i was reffering to tig welding in the last part saying about the example of 2" pipe.
(Cant edit bottom part of the post on my phone lol)
It's all down to mental & physical dexterity , even if your as old as me , I've had a stroke & so have had to re-learn all manner of things again as well as learn many new things .
Whilst you're sat at home, wear a new clean glove on your right hand and practice feeding a new rod with the hand . Just keep on doing it for a timed fifteen minutes at a time and and consciously thinking through every movement . ( Don't go on for longer than fifteen minutes per session , you'll get tired , start making mistakes & become frustrated /annoyed ) .
it won't be long before your sliding it through as easy as anything . Try tinning two separate thin electrical multi strand wires with 2 mm long stripped ends , standing up , with the iron in your right hand , solder & wires in the left . No cheating using a vise or a clamp just your fingers .
Once you've got it down to fine art just like the rod feeding exercise try doing it with your other hand .
It's to do with what's called " Muscle memory " .
Over time you'll be programming your brain to accept and like the messages it sends out and the nerve sensations you get as well as the associated visual pictures .. the more you reinforce it correctly the better you 'll become .
I can manage feeding rods with left, soldering is relatively easy, I just seem to struggle with the finer movements of a tungsten with ol' lefty
Might give it a go in the new year, it really drives me crackers, I can type with both hands on a PC or phone, just doesn't feel right holding a torch unless it's upside down
