Hi all, got a job coming up on a traction engine I am building. I need to weld some rings into the wheel rims, here is a picture of another builders' work...

The steel is min 6mm thick so I can see plenty of power being needed, my main concern is warpage or distortion.
The wheels are 36" diameter and 6" wide at the rim.
What would be a good technique to use here?
I guess a good few heavy tack welds first but how to run the seams?
I'm using MiG with hobby-weld 5 gas and 0.8mm wire.
