Having recently become the proud owner of two-and-a-bit tonnes of finest Coventry steel I felt the need to splash out on a decent jack; capable of safely lifting said steed onto axle stands.
After a lot of thought, I ended up with this:http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j
It's a great jack, however, the extremely low clearance at the front of the Jag makes getting it under nigh on impossible. The solution to this relies on using my old Halfords trolley jack to get the car lifted far enough to get the Clarke under.
I've had this particluar Halfords jack for more than twenty years now. My nan treated me to it, when I first passed my test and I decied that I needed to start enhancing my Renault 9.
Over the years, I have, on occaision, flirted with new jacks. Every time, I end up going back to my trusty old Halfords jack. Not only does it fit neatly under every car that I have ever owned (from a Hillman Hunter - to a Porsche 944 - and now, the Jag) but I have yet to find another with the same level of control when lowering the vehicle on to stands. I will be truly gutted if it evers gives up on me.
This made me think - I bet everyone's got thier own 'old faithful' tool of some description - the one that you often try to replace, but, truth be told, you know you'll never find better!
