Fullers earth?People use smashed up cat litter for some, or all, of home brew greensand. Something to look into?
yep its not green in colour though Mansfield sand that's where a quarry is that produced itGreen sand.
Often wondered if they quarried it near me. One of the lanes here is called greensands.yep its not green in colour though Mansfield sand that's where a quarry is that produced it
Fullers earth?
its difficult to buy fullers earth in large quantities you have to have a legit use for it .a clever Irishman was buying tonnes of it then buying red diesel and filtering it through coming out clear then flogging it over the border for full price and claiming vat back
When I was in a Foundry, we used Mansfield Red....Green sand refers to the condition ie soft, rather than the colour. It was bonded together using sodium silicate which is hardened off by passing CO2 through it. The semi-hard mould can then be baked.yep its not green in colour though Mansfield sand that's where a quarry is that produced it
be careful if not baking it....remember the steam reaction.....pouring molten metal onto wet sand is a recipe for disasterMansfield sand is a quarried sand [from mansfield] which has a natural clay content that is ideal for moulding using water to make it bond together, when greensand loses it's bond bentonite clay can be added & mulled to bring it back to constistency. CO2 moulding is sodium silicate[waterglass] mixed with a fine dry sand with no bond then moulded & injected with co2 to harden it, the main advantage is that it can be used straightaway with no requirement/need to bake it, It's also has a stronger bond than the traditional greensand.
