I had some time in the garage yesterday getting some initial set-up done on my new MIG.
Before I begin I am under no illusions that you cannot simply 'pick up and play' with welding, and I am in awe of people that have learned this withcraft, and in even more awe of people on forums like this who are happy to patiently guide noobs like myself through the process (I doff my cap to you all)
I'm running 0.6mm wire, have a new Röhr MIG-200FI and plenty of scrap 1mm metal to practice and play.
I've read enough online and watched plenty of YooToob videos to see that having a basic starting set up is good to start, then you need to tweak and tune as you go to find the correct settings for your work. This is where I struggled, as whatever I did I couldn't get the weld to 'pool' or 'flow' it more or less just sat on the metal?? Towards the end of my practice I did start to tweak the gas flow and I felt it was getting better, but still not enough and I didn't want to stress out too much so I stopped play.
Any pointers as to where I may be going wrong? I did try plenty of combinations of Volt setting versus Wire Speed etc, and I did look at the excellent tutorial guide on here for setting Power and Wire Speed as a starting point but this told me to start the power setting at 1 (which I thought was too low) but I started her and adjusted. Should I have cleaned the metal, it is from Metals4U as offcuts etc?
I've always learned better when being shown things practically as I do feel like I am fumbing in the dark (no pun intended) a lot when learning a brand new skill haha
Anyway here's some pics (I'm not ashamed as I know I will improve) and it does show penetrating an least haha. Oh and I will be getting a guillotine to help me make smaller test pieces ...
Thanks in advance.
