Random question because im being indecisive, but im modding a shortened sump, parent material is 1,5mm as is the majority of the original sump (tho thinned to more like 0,8 on the sidewall) and I have stock of both 1mm and 2mm plate and cant really decided which is better or would make the job easier. Im planning to over lap it 3-4mm and just weld over the corner, but could butt weld it.
Thoughts are than usually larger is easier, but as im welding the new plate the to the old, it might be easier to weld the thinner (1mm) to the (1.5) base than welding 2mm to 1,5 ?
I'll be using a esab caddy mig 160 on 0.8mm wire which should turn down more than low enough although ive never used it that thin before.
