Welding table

Usually people first project, but i`ve only just gotten round to making one after years of makeshift sheets of metal on workmates and the like.

Anyway, the build, steel turned up this morning. SHS (box section) is 50x50x2.5, CHS (tube) is 76mm 3mm wall. Top is in the background, 15mm thick, 2x1m.

After cutting.


Ends of box notched.


The resultant mess made of a cobalt holesaw (also destroyed the gearbox on the drill, would have used the pillar, but i`ll be ******ed if I know where the chuck key has gone, it was welded to a chain, that in turn was welded to the drill)


Dry assembled


And tacked ready for completion tommorow

Any particular reason for CHS legs?, would be much easier to make it all from box section, nicely made though.

Looking good but I'd love to know why you faffed about with CHS and notching. Aesthetics?

I was thinking that. Mine are made from square section cos its easier to work. It does look smart with CHS legs though. I hate working with tube. Faffy joints and no reference faces!

Same here, if i can avoid tube, i will.

Before you go merryily welding the plate to the frame, check its flat first
And dont be tempted to put masses of weld on it. A few 25mm stitches will be plenty enough

TBH, i`m not totally sure why I used CHS, something a bit different I guess, although the fact that I have an extra length of SHS probably means I didnt mean to when i first thought about it.

I wasn`t planning on fixing the top too much, I`d like to be able to take it off to make the whole thing easier to handle should I ever wish to move it.

Also, i`m suprise no one`s shouted at me for it looking like I was running a welder from an extension lead (I wasn`t, it`s just going to the bandsaw sitting atop it) or the mass of fire hazards (which will of course be moved before anything is done in anger)

I run mine off an extension lead all the time - my shed is of the "long narrow" rather than "short wide" variety, the sockets are at the front near the door and the project is at the back, ~ 80' away. Only welding thin steel, though, maximum 16 gauge.

Bench is looking good though. You gonna chrome it before you put the top on?

He can be forgiven, next project is a fruit press to make some cider from all the apples we have. Now how do I go about making a V8 powered one

I can't help thinking that it has no diagonal bracing, and I have visions of it one day folding itself up. That would not be good with a 250kg ish top on.

Or would that be overkill?

250kg's? with a 15mm thick top stitched on you could put 2tonne+ on that if the welding is up to scratch (which I'm sure it is). W/A

All would be good if I could actually manage to get the top on it. Next plan if to either try and get an engine crane in there, or take the roof off and get a proper crane in (hopefully it wont get that extreme)

If the plate is laying on the floor, turn the frame over, stitch it on then roll the bench over. Safer than trying to hitch or manhandle the plate - fingers, toes, etc. W/A

Better than that, the plate is standing on it`s side, so only needs a 90 degree rotation. I`d thought about it, but was trying to avoid welding it on at all a. so the whole thing is easier to move again in the future b. so the plate can be flipped if one side becomes too damaged.

The force goes down the legs into whatever it's stood on, tables don't go round corners so why should there be any need for diagonals ?

I'd weld a couple of locating tags on the top and probably drill and bolt through them to stop it sliding or countersink a couple of holes and bolt through the end rails. An engine crane with a couple of slings would do the job easily and the wheels would roll under the table to position it.

What on earth are you going to be doing to damage 15mm thick plate? Grind off spatter/tacks or weld up unwanted holes! W/A

You never know, might get a bit ambitious with the plasma cutter lol. Off to pick up an engine crane now, lets see if i get anywhere that way.
