I need to weld some frames in stainless angle. 50/50 by 5mm.
I have basic mig set and I have a friend with a DC tig set but he's not welded stainless either.
Advice please.
Tig it Mig it or even Arc it. Stainless welding is no different to mild steel, cetainly not with TIG, you just need to get the right filler rods. It mig's up ok as well, i believe you need gas with no more than 5% CO2, so argo shield light is fine. Just get a small roll of stainless wire, do a few practice runs before on the real thing.
I have just started doing this, and to my surprise it is almost the same as welding mild steel, the welds are not as tidy, but are sound and look acceptable. I am using Argon/Co2/02 mix I forget the proportions.
Where in Glos are you? I am in Ross on Wye, if you want to come and have a look drop me a line.
Hi Jimbo
Welcome to the forum, Has your mate welded mild steel with his tig, if so he wont find it very much different welding stainless, probably easier actually, use a 308 for preference, or a 316 stainless rod, pure argon shielding gas, and a thoriated or cerated tungsten,
If you want to mig it use a 308 filler wire, and an argon / 5% Co2 mix, although it will depend on how powerful your mig is as to whether its suitable
