Following on from an idea from Eurotorch to get safety advice in one place, what precautions would you suggest MIG welders should take for their safety. And why?
I'll start off (do feel free to correct me or add to my ideas):
Do wear a welding mask with the appropriate grade filter.
(Normally number 10 for car thickness metal)
Why - Direct welding light on the cornea would give it sunburn which is quite painful. It's called "arc eye" and a mild case would tend to result in couple of days of eye pain.
Do cover all exposed skin with gloves and sleeved overalls.
Why - Once again, sunburn. The UV light from welding is much the same as UV light from the sun. A few minutes welding will have the same effect as a few hours of sun exposure.
That's me - want to give others a chance.
