I recently picked up a load of fire blankets from the guy who checks the extinguishers at work, they were headed for the skip till I rescued them. he said they swop when required and the old ones get binned. good source if you can find a local extinguisher engineer.

Did you ask why they were being binned?

when they are replaced due to uv damage to case or case damaged etc they just bin the old ones

If they are in the case, they will never get UV damaged.
The cases should be UV prove plastic, as they would of been installed after 2008.

A Fire blanket is only to be replaced if:
It is damaged.
If it is contaminated.
If it has gotten wet. But that should be immediately reported as it has reduced your listed Fire safety standard.

Under Normal service life we advise they are to be replaced every 5 years. Or as advised by the Manufacture.


If the above is not met under BAFE then I would question the company doing the service.
FB do not have a service life, unlike fire extinguishers. So it is "Advice" to change after 5 years.

They should be fixed to a wall following the manufacture instructions.

Given that.
I will always bin them if the pull down tags are damaged.

Most if not all modern printing machines have auto blanket washes, just keep the tank topped up and everything happens automatically. Very little free solvent used now days

It is - so simple - so cheap - so functional - so robust. The lids are made so they will not stay up - the lids are not flat - they are like little roofs - so you cannot put anything on them (anything you did would just roll off).

Could never understand - why this idea was not taken up up other industries.

I suspect that different industries don’t talk to each other. If and when they do there’s probably bigger head line ticket items that top of the agenda rather than simple and effective solutions rkthat others may find useful

They serve two purposes. If the can’t put the fire out they can be used as a battering ram to make an escape

It wouldn't bother me having a date-expired one in my workshop at home. I see a lot of very out of date ones in demolition and the water ones always get let off because it makes them lighter to gather up. Never seen on fail to work unless it was visibly damaged (which also happens a lot in demolition).

Dunno about the AFFF or powder ones as they make too much mess, but I have a couple of those too.

Well, busy 2 days just finished. Filled 5 plastic decent sized storage boxes with tools, dismantled a workbench, emptied and removed a filled to the brim 4 drawer filing cabinet to side of house. Moved the Ikea wardrobe from the wee hut, to the big hut, along with the welders, two gas bottles, all the welding accessories, gear, and not forgetting the welding table.

Moved small machine stand into wee hut, in preparation for the delivery of my bench top milling machine. Made even more mess in big hut while waiting for cheap metal roof panels (for weld proofing corner of hut) to be delivered next week.

Vaguely tidied up the wee hut, then called it a day. Excuse wiring mess, I still need to buy some conduit to finish it off.

Well, the money gods in the shape of a ppi refund smiled upon me last week, so being that it wasn’t ‘real’ money, I decided to treat myself with it.

After googling, and reading reviews, I narrowed it down to two that fitted the bill, so I bought one.

Oh, and I need to paint the inside of both huts before winter.
