Last night at my evening course we had a go at a fillet weld around the circumference of a pipe sitting vertically on a horizontal plate. The instructor demonstrated how to do it with MIG, which looked pretty easy, but I wanted to TIG it.
I tacked the pipe to the plate with tacks at 3 and 9 o'clock, then tried to weld it continuously between the tacks, ie. halfway round the circle. Everything went ok up to about 6 o'clock, then it all went tits up as I couldn't see the weld due to the torch being in the way.
Any tips on how to do this particular weld? Should it be done in quarter circles rather than halves? I know it would be dead easy with a turntable, but I want to be able to do it the hard way.
Thanks
