The wife and I have been to look at a house over the weekend, its a three bed farmhouse up on the moors near where we are now with a 27' x 35' stone barn attached hich is just right to convert into more house as the actual house is quite small. All sat in an acre so I've got room to build a decent garage/workshop too. The main issue is its about 1/2 mile off the road up an appallingly bad unsurfaced track. I did get up it easily in 2wd in my trooper but you wouldn't get a normal car up it at the moment, neither would you get the bin men, oil tanker or gas tanker.
My thinking is it wouldn't be too hard to turn it into a reasonable road with some graft and a few lorry loads of aggregate/road planings until we can afford at some point to get it tarred properly. Now to do this requires obviously something bigger than a pick and shovel. Anyone got any idea what a real cheap JCB goes for these days? Don't care how old it is or if it looks like a bag of pooh or isn't road worthy. I also reckon a little road roller, maybe the walk behind type and a dumper truck would be handy too. It could all then be used to dig the footings for a nice big concrete slab for my workshop afterwards. Whats the best place to find this sort of thing? Machinery auctions like the ones at Clitheroe?
